Google has disclosed that its Cloud unit is putting together a team that will build services for blockchain developers creating Web3 applications, according to a recent report by CNBC.
Per the internal email sent to employees, which was seen by CNBC, Google Cloud’s vice president, Amit Zavery, noted that the company intends to leverage the surging interest in digital assets and Web3 to become a go-to platform for developers running Web3 applications.
“While the world is still early in its embrace of Web3, it is a market that is already demonstrating tremendous potential with many customers asking us to increase our support for Web3 and Crypto-related technologies,” the email reads.
Not Getting Involved in Crypto Directly
Zavery clarified that the latest move does not suggest that Google intends to become a part of the cryptocurrency space directly. Rather, the company’s cloud unit will only be developing solutions that developers can utilize while creating these decentralized applications.
He said, “We’re not trying to be part of that cryptocurrency wave directly. We’re providing technologies for companies to use and take advantage of the distributed nature of Web3 in their current businesses and enterprises.”
While several multinational tech companies, including Facebook, have made several significant moves to establish their presence in the metaverse and Web3 space, Google intends to stay ahead of the game. It is planning to offer back-end services to developers seeking to build their own Web3 software.
One of the main themes of Web3 is to move away from Web 2.0, which is majorly dominated by multinational tech companies, including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and more. It seeks to increase decentralization and give internet users more control over how their data is used.
According to the report, the new team will be led by the former Citigroup executive, James Tromans. The team will be made up of Google Cloud employees who have been peripherally involved in Web3.
Just last week, former Google CEO, Eric Schmidt expressed his support for Web3, adding that he is fascinated by the technology and believes it will work.
