The English Premier League (EPL) Files two Cryptocurrency & NFT trademarks in the U.S.

English Premier League (EPL)

The most watched sports league in the world, English Premier League (EPL), has stepped into the digital space as it has filed two cryptocurrencies and NFT trademarks in the U.S.The Premier League consists of 20 teams, and is the highest level of professional English football.

The trademarks were filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) last week and brought to light in a tweet by licensed trademark attorney Michael Kondoudis on June 6.

The filling of trademarks was done last week using the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). On June 6, Michael Kondoudis, licensed trademark attorney, highlighted this in a tweet.

The two fillings are in compliance with the U.S. use of trademarks associated with the league, one regarding a “loving cup trophy” ornamented with lions on each handle and a crown on top and one centered on the league’s name and logo of a “lion wearing a crown in three-quarter view.”

The trademark filings cover the development of the creation and sale of digital assets, cryptocurrencies, virtual clothing, and media files verified by NFTs. The trademarks further include the Premier League trademarks in “augmented, virtual, and mixed reality software.”

Over the recent years, the NFT market has grown as more firms are entering the digital space. NBA Top Shot is one of the prominent NFT projects that was launched in 2020. According to the data from CryptoSlam, the collection has crossed the mark of $1 billion in sales.

Due to the crypto crash earlier in May, the demand for cryptocurrencies and NFTs might have decreased. However, the NFT sales can still exceed the mark of $20 billion in volume as of last year.

Interestingly, the use-cases of digital assets can be seen becoming increasingly popular in the sports world, particularly in football clubs. Arsenal announced last month that it has collaborated with Unagi as a free to play game where players can be bought as NFTs.

Users can keep player cards as collectables, trade the cards with other players and sell them on an open market for in-game currency, in the game.
