Airbnb will soon accept cryptocurrency as a payment method

  • Based on a recent Twitter poll, Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb, has suggested that the popular holiday home-booking website may soon accept cryptocurrency payments.
  • Users wish to rent their next house or apartment and pay for the services using Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies.
  • If the popular request is accepted, Airbnb will join the ranks of companies such as Tesla and AMC for taking cryptocurrencies as payment.

Users of Airbnb want the company to accept cryptocurrency payments.

According to a recent study conducted by Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky, users want bitcoin payment alternatives. Over the weekend, Chesky held a Twitter poll, asking his 399k followers to recommend a feature or product that the firm should offer in 2022.

Chesky stated in a follow-up tweet earlier today that he has received 4,000 proposals so far, with bitcoin payment methods taking the top spot. Customers who use Airbnb wish to rent their next house or apartment and pay for the services using Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies.

AMC conducted a similar poll. In November of last year, AMC, one of the world’s major theater chains, joined the cryptocurrency space.

In September, AMC CEO Adam Eron polled his Twitter followers to see if they wanted the firm to start taking cryptocurrency. 68.1 percent of those polled said yes, and the company will now accept bitcoin payments.

About Airbnb

Airbnb operates a travel-related internet marketplace. According to the company’s website, there are already over 5.6 million postings globally. Since its beginning in 2007, Airbnb has serviced over 1 billion customers, and over 4 million hosts have advertised their apartments on the marketplace.

Airbnb allows Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and JCB as payment options in the majority of countries. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Paypal are all acceptable methods of payment. Currently, cryptocurrencies are not accepted as a payment option by Airbnb.

Airbnb’s competitor is already experimenting with cryptocurrency payments

While Airbnb is still in the early stages of accepting cryptocurrency payments, DTravel, a decentralized home-sharing network, made it feasible in 2021.

Travala.com has incorporated the platform. Users who own the DTravel (TRVL) token, which is backed by Binance, control this.

Customers may use cryptocurrencies to reserve 250,000 houses. The TRVL token may be used to book houses on a global network of 20,000 houses. TRVL tokens can be purchased on exchanges such as MEXC Global, Bybit, Gate, and KuCoin.

Airbnb has also been exploring cryptocurrency payment for quite some time. “We’ve been observing the region for a long time,” Chesky said, adding that “the Coinbase developer was one of our early employees.”
