Rappi Launches Crypto Payment Pilot Program; Partners BitPay and Bitso

Colombia-based technology company Rappi has launched a crypto payment pilot program in Mexico for its mobile app. The launch of the new initiative by the company now allows Mexican users of the app to choose to pay for rendered services with cryptocurrencies.

The app, also known as Rappi, is a mobile app that offers users on-demand deliveries of food and other goods across Latin America.

Rappi Partners BitPay and Bitso

To bring the crypto payment pilot program to fruition, Rappi partnered up with cryptocurrency payment service provider BitPay as well as crypto exchange Bitso.

According to Rappi, the two crypto platforms will make it possible for Rappi app users to turn cryptocurrencies into credits within the app and thereby make purchases.

The company, however, did not mention the particular cryptocurrencies that will be supported on the app.

Commenting on the development, Sebastian Mejia, co-founder of Rappi, said:

“It’s a first step that will allow us to learn and continue incorporating the crypto world into Rappi.”

Interest in Crypto Continues to Surge

Due to increasing demand by their customers, the past few years have seen a significant growth in the number of companies integrating cryptocurrencies as payment options.

Last year, U.S.-based eCommerce store Wellbots started accepting cryptocurrency payments at checkout, allowing its customers to pay for goods on the platform with Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Litecoin (LTC), Dai stablecoin (DAI), and USD Coin (USDC).

Payment solutions company Verifone also partnered with Bitpay last year to launch a new initiative that allows its customers to pay for goods with cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Dogecoin (DOGE), and others.

More recently, Off-White, one of the world’s hottest fashion brands, announced that its customers can now use cryptocurrencies to pay for its services.

Meanwhile, some companies have not yet started accepting crypto as payments but are making plans toward it.

In February, Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of popular ride-sharing firm Uber Technologies, revealed that the company will eventually accept cryptocurrencies as a payment option when the time is right. He, however, stated that discussions about it are still ongoing.
