Yuga Labs Reaches Settlement in RR/BAYC Lawsuit: APE Impact

Yuga Labs RR/BAYC Lawsuit Concluded

Bored Ape Yacht Club’s creator Yuga Labs has reached a settlement in the long-standing lawsuit with artists Ryder Ripps and Jeremy Cahen, who sold similar NFTs through the RR/BAYC project. According to documents filed with the Central District of California on Tuesday, Ripps and Cahen have been permanently enjoined from using Yuga Labs’ images and trademarks. Under the settlement, the smart contracts, domains, and remaining NFTs of the RR/BAYC project will be transferred to Yuga Labs within 10 days. The court also ordered them not to transfer these assets to evade the handover.

The lawsuit began in June 2022 when Yuga Labs accused Ripps and Cahen of copying BAYC猿 images and making millions in profit. The artists described the RR/BAYC NFTs launched in May 2022 as parody and argued they were protected by freedom of expression. In April 2023, the court ruled in favor of Yuga, imposing a $1.37 million penalty; in 2024, this rose to $9 million. In 2025, the appeals court overturned the decision, stating a jury trial was required, but the parties ended the process with a settlement. This agreement may positively impact APE detailed analysis by strengthening the BAYC ecosystem’s brand integrity.
