Web3 Wallet MetaMask Update Adds Third Party Phishing Detection

  • MetaMask updated security settings that will enable third party services to assist with phishing detection and identify incoming transactions.
  • The third party service providers include Etherscan, jsDeliver, and Coingecko.
  • The MetaMask extension was also updated for better control and transparency.

Web3 wallet MetaMask has introduced new features to its privacy and security settings that will enable requests to third party services helping with phishing detection and identifying transactions.

Along with the new settings, the platform extension was also updated to maximize user control. Newly created wallets will see an updated experience of the MetaMask extension.

The official announcement was made via Twitter. When making a new wallet, users will be able to click on “Set advanced privacy settings” to modify their RPC providers (allows access to a server and interact with a certain blockchain) and enable phishing detection.

Moreover, it will also show incoming transactions, a balance checker, and add custom IFPS gateway via third party services.

By enabling access to the IP address, phishing detection alerts will rely on jsDeliver. Etherscan will be used to show incoming transactions by having the IP and Ethereum address. Coingecko and CryptoCompare APIs will show token prices and balances.

Furthermore, all the new features can be enabled and disabled in settings for any existing wallet. In previous months, MetaMask and other self-custodial wallets have been subject to multiple hacks and phishing attacks. these updates will enhance user experience on the leading non-custodial Web3 wallet.

Last year, MetaMask updated its data collection policy, causing an outrage from the crypto community thinking that they started to collect user’s wallets and IP addresses. Developer ConsenSys stepped in and explained through an official blog how the new data retention policies would take place.
