Tech Giants Reportedly Created an Extended Reality (XR) Alliance

The extended reality (XR) market is likely to see leading players in the technology market making moves in 2024. Reports are that Samsung, Qualcomm, and Google could collectively make their first launch next year. The search engine giant was reportedly developing an augmented reality (AR) headset under the codename ‘Project Iris.’ However, news media house, The Verge, reported this June that the initiative was plagued by layoffs and shifting strategies during the development.

Shaping The Metaverse of Tomorrow

Korean newspaper, The JoongAng sheds light on an ‘extended reality alliance’ among the aforementioned companies. The production date of the device codenamed ‘Infinite’ is set up for December next year. Additionally, the initial shipment quantity is reportedly set at 30,000 units.

An anonymous industry insider told The JoongAng that, “The business is taking shape, with Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display signing an XR screen technology license agreement.” The person added that Samsung Electronics plans to introduce XR devices at the Unpack (new product release) event in the second half of next year.

XR is treated as a catch-all term bringing capabilities of augmented virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), and augmented reality together. KPMG, one of the Big Four accounting firms, describes the technology as “a new frontier of converging technologies shaping the metaverse of tomorrow.”

Such technologies will be an integral part of virtual worlds, however, a future like that will need significant advancements. Qualcomm is among the leading chipmakers globally. Last year, it released its Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile processor. Recently, it ended a partnership with Iridium, a satellite communications company, affecting its goal to provide satellite-to-phone services according to business news provider CNBC.

Samsung is already foraying into virtual worlds with its 837X store in Decentrand, a metaverse game. It is already among the largest brand land takeovers on the platform. The initiative landed up with three experiences for users namely Connectivity Theatre, Sustainability Forest, and Customization Stage.

Google has experimenting with AR technologies since 2013. It released Google Glass. In 2015, The New York Times reported the redesigning of the product by an American engineer Anthony Michael Fadell. In March, the company announced that it would discontinue its smart glasses in September.

Technology giants like Meta Platforms and Apple are also testing their might in the head-mounted devices (HMDs) sector. The social media giant’s latest product, Quest 3, is cheaper and better than their previous devices. On the other hand, the iPhone maker is set to release their spatial computing-focuses Vision Pro in early 2024.
