Surprise: ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Is Getting a Big Update With Romance and Transit Options

Thought Cyberpunk 2077 was all finished with the big recent 2.0 update? Not so fast: Night City is getting another upgrade, developer CD Projekt Red (CDPR) announced Friday. The latest update, version 2.1, will add a fully functioning metro system to the open-world game, more ways to listen to Night City radio stations, and more time with romantic partners.

The Night City Area Rapid Transit (NCART) system was hinted at in the early announcement of Cyberpunk 2077 and featured in the Netflix series “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners,” but was not previously available in the game. The Cyberpunk 2077 modding community added a version for PC, but now the feature will be available to all players through an official implementation.

“The metro was not in our plan for a long time,” Cyberpunk 2077 producer Monika Janowska said on a Twitch stream. “However, over time, we’ve revisited our plan, and with the Ultimate Edition on the horizon, we decided that it actually could be achievable. So we decided to go for it.”

CDPR said that players can travel between 19 metro stations in Night City once they have access to the train network. However, before players can use the train system, CDPR says a message must be received from NCART to give players a metro pass in their inventory.

Until the pass is received, NCART stations will act only as standard fast travel points like before the update, and will only be available after completing the Konpeki Plaza mission that opens up the entire map of Night City.

“We’ve been showing it so many times. Maybe it’s about time we actually make it for the game—so we did,” Cyberpunk 2077 Quest Director Pawel Sasko added.

Update 2.1 is the latest enhancement to Cyberpunk 2077 that CD Projekt Red has released to give new life to the game after a disastrous launch in December 2020. In August, the studio announced several major upgrades to the game—including a redesigned cyberware and perk tree—that coincided with the launch of the Phantom Liberty DLC.

In October, CD Projekt Red said the developer turned to generative AI to recreate the voice of Ripperdoc character Viktor Vector, originally played by Polish voice actor Miłogost “Miłek” Reczek, who passed away in 2021.

The release of update 2.1 coincides with the launch of the Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on December 5. The Ultimate Edition package includes the original Cyberpunk 2077 story and the new spy-thriller adventure Phantom Liberty expansion set in the new Dogtown district, previous updates, and the new update 2.1 additions.

The Update 2.1 for Cyberpunk 2077 also introduces a dedicated “Accessibility” tab that will be added to the game’s settings, streamlining access to all the game’s accessibility options. This includes improved subtitles visibility, more advanced aim assist, and a larger HUD display.

Though CDPR did not give specific details, Sasko did confirm new options for spending time with V’s romantic partners in the game.

CD Projekt Red said other new features coming in the massive Cyberpunk 2077 update include replayable car races, new vehicles and functionality, additional car chases, boss fight improvements, including the endgame fight with Adam Smasher, and the ability to listen to music outside of vehicles.

“We have tried to make it as seamless as possible so that you will really be able to listen to the radio, drive around, enjoy the atmosphere, and enjoy the city,” Sasko said. “You can do that now.”
