Polkadot: DOTs blocked for crowdloan or parachain slot

10% of all existing DOT tokens in the world are currently locked up in Polkadot’s crowdloan or parachain slots.

One year of success

In total, there are just over a billion DOT in circulation, with a total value of around $32 billion. So over $3 billion in DOT tokens are currently locked up in Polkadot’s crowdloan services or parachain slots.

In total, 16 parachains have been created on Kusama, and more than 2 million lines of code have been written, making 2021 a very successful year for the project

For Polkadot, 2021 was a year of growth

The DOT cryptocurrency itself hit an all-time high on 4 November, and is up 190% from twelve months ago.

Until 2020, there were around six thousand individual accounts staking on Polkadot, while during 2021, this rose to over twenty thousand

Three million accounts on the Polkadot and Kusama parachains

The various parachains on Polkadot and Kusama now have nearly 3 million registered user accounts, and are managed by 6,000 validators.

The Polkadot subreddit now has 70,000 members and the Discord server 20,000. The YouTube channel has over 40,000 subscribers, and during 2021 saw 1.1 million viewers watch 126,200 hours of educational material.

In short, the project is very active, and 2021 was a year full of activity and accomplishments

The future of Polkadot

Gavin Wood, co-founder of Polkadot and Kusama, as well as Ethereum and the Web3 Foundation, published a long account of last year’s achievements in which he highlights how 2021 was the year of final delivery and the end of a chapter that began in 2016.

According to Wood, 2022 is the beginning of the next chapter in Polkadot’s story, with the prospect of large-scale hyper-connectivity under a single umbrella provided by Polkadot.

With more than 150 chains serving different purposes, many of which already have test-nets, there is much to look forward to, such as the Parity decentralized bridges, which will connect Polkadot to Kusama, and especially Snowfork, which will connect Polkadot to Ethereum.
