NFT marketplace OpenSea has alluded to an April launch date for its Solana NFT support. Such support would place OpenSea in direct competition with Magic Eden, the current leader in Solana NFT sales.

April Drop Date

Solana NFTs may be available on OpenSea within the next month, according to the NFT giant’s official Twitter account.

In a tweet today, OpenSea teased imminent Solana NFT support in the form of a 16-second video teaser. With a caption reading, “The best kept secret in web3,” the teaser video displays the text, “wen solana?” among a collage of NFTs before stating, “April 2022.”

The specific date is still unknown, and while OpenSea’s messaging is only slightly cryptic, the announcement all but confirms rumors that the leading NFT marketplace would soon integrate Solana functionality.

Rumors of Solana NFT support have circulated since as early as January, when screenshots appeared online of what appeared to be Phantom wallet functionality within OpenSea. Tech blogger Jane Manchun Wong found references to Solana as a supported blockchain while reverse-engineering OpenSea’s website, which she then shared online. At the time, OpenSea attempted to distance itself from the implication.

Now, however, it appears that the rumors contained some truth.

OpenSea remains the world’s dominant NFT marketplace with over 1.6 million ETH in sales volume transacted in March 2022, per Dune Analytics.

Currently, Magic Eden leads the way in Solana NFT sales by a wide margin, outperforming second-place Solanart by a sixteen-fold margin at the time of writing. Magic Eden enjoyed a boost earlier this month in the form of a $27 million series A raise led by Paradigm. If OpenSea moves forward with Solana NFT functionality, it would likely have a noticeable impact on Magic Eden’s market share.

Solana would be the fourth blockchain supported on OpenSea, the other three being Ethereum, Polygon, and Klaytn.

Disclosure: At the time of writing, the author of this piece owned ETH, SOL, several other cryptocurrencies, and NFTs.
