Georgia Tech is set to fire men’s basketball coach Josh Pastner.
The news was first reported by ESPN and confirmed by a person with direct knowledge of the situation.
Pastner, 45, went 109-113 in seven seasons at the ACC school after seven at Memphis. The Yellow Jackets finished 15-18 this season, 6-14 in the ACC. Pastner had one NCAA Tournament appearance in 2021.
In 2019, the NCAA found major recruiting violations committed by former Georgia Tech assistant coach Darryl LaBarrie and a former friend of Pastner.
Pastner’s former friend, Ron Bell, identified by the NCAA as a “representative of the institution’s athletic interests,” was said to have provided more than $2,000 in impermissible benefits to players in 2016 and 2017.
The NCAA said LaBarrie gave $300 to a recruit for a visit to an Atlanta strip club and provided false or misleading statements to the NCAA about the visit. The NCAA also said LaBarrie attempted to influence a team member to provide false information about the visit.
The school imposed a postseason ban for 2020 but the NCAA Tournament was canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic.
