Binance Founder CZ Seeks Travel Permission While Awaiting Sentence

  • A move to seal a previous motion pertaining to authorization to travel was filed.
  • CZ’s departure to a nation without an extradition treaty was deemed a concern by the DOJ.

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) has asked a federal court in the U.S to issue a travel authorization order, which is the most recent move in the ongoing case against him by the United States DOJ.

Previously, the court had directed that the former CEO of Binance reside in the United States between the time of his plea and his sentence in February 2024. Late on December 27, a move to seal a previous motion pertaining to authorization to travel was filed by the attorney representing CZ.

Ruling Underway

The court is being asked by defendant CZ to seal the request for travel authorization and the submission itself. Additionally, the request to seal the application for travel authorization included sealing the proposed order. The motion, filing, and ruling include Changpeng Zhao’s child’s sensitive private medical information, hence he has requested that they be sealed.

In response to the government’s request to appeal the magistrate judge’s decision on the defendant’s pre-sentencing travel limits, CZ had already asked Judge Richard Jones to seal papers.

Prior to the sentence hearing, a magistrate court gave CZ permission to see his family members in the United Arab Emirates. On the other hand, CZ’s alleged departure to a nation without an extradition treaty was deemed a concern by DOJ prosecutors.

Moreover, the DOJ accuses CZ of violating anti-money laundering rules; CZ pled guilty. He left his positions as chairman of the U.S subsidiary and chief executive officer of Binance. The crime has a mandatory minimum sentence of 10–16 months or, depending on the circumstances, 12–18 months in jail.
