In a groundbreaking move for the cryptocurrency and blockchain space, Ava Labs’ Core wallet introduces a revolutionary Seed Abstraction feature, redefining the Web3 wallet experience. Core‘s innovative approach allows users to operate without the need for seed phrases, simplifying the onboarding process while maintaining self-custody and high-security standards.

The traditional method of creating and securing crypto wallets involves the generation and safeguarding of seed phrases – a series of words that act as a backup and recovery mechanism. However, this process is not only cumbersome but poses risks, as many users often face challenges managing and securing these crucial seed phrases.

Simplified Onboarding with Web2 Methods

Core’s Seed Abstraction changes the game by enabling users to create and manage keys using familiar Web2 methods, such as Gmail and Apple logins. Users can seamlessly use a Core-generated seed across various blockchains, including popular ones like Bitcoin and Ethereum Virtual Machines (EVMs). This eliminates the complexities associated with multiple contracts or cross-chain compatibility issues.

Unlike other offerings, such as ERC-4337 (account abstraction), which limits users to EVM chains, Core empowers its users to transact confidently across multiple environments, including Bitcoin, Avalanche C, X and P-Chains, and any EVM.

Security Measures and Cubist’s CubeSigner Integration

To ensure the security of users’ assets and transactions, Core leverages Cubist’s CubeSigner non-custodial signing service. This service facilitates secure social logins and manages keys within secure hardware. Core generates and signs transactions remotely from CubeSigner’s secure hardware, keeping private keys confidential.

Additionally, Core enhances security by requiring both login details and a physical authentication device for account access. CubeSigner’s protocol for exporting keys includes extra security measures and waiting periods, protecting against attacks like SIM swapping and ensuring only the rightful owner can export their keys.

Optional Seed Phrases and Future Implications

While Core introduces a groundbreaking seedless experience, users who prefer traditional seed phrases can continue to do so, with existing wallet creation options remaining in place. Users opting for seedless functionality will need to create new Core wallets to enjoy the associated benefits.
