Apple’s Signal Security Fix and TON Connection

Apple fixed a security vulnerability on iPhones that prevented the FBI from accessing deleted Signal app messages from the phone’s push notification database. Even if the app was deleted and messages were set to disappear, the notifications that should have been deleted were unexpectedly retained on the device. According to Apple’s security announcement released on Wednesday, this issue was fixed with the latest iOS version. Signal also confirmed in an X post that Apple’s update resolved issues allowing law enforcement access to messages.

According to a 404 Media article published on April 9, the issue emerged in documents from an FBI case in a Texas federal court. The documents showed that Signal message previews were forensically extracted from the defendant’s iPhone in an investigation into an attack on the Prairieland ICE Detention Facility. Signal President Meredith Whittaker and Telegram founder Pavel Durov had called on Apple for a quick fix, emphasizing that notification previews should not be stored in the database. Although Signal uses end-to-end encryption, this incident highlighted the importance of device and operating system security. For the TON ecosystem, privacy-focused messaging is becoming critical with Pavel Durov’s vision.
