Amazon’s most recent advancement in warehouse technology brings artificial intelligence directly into the workflow of its facility employees.

During its “Delivering the Future” showcase in Dartford, UK, the retail giant demonstrated the enhanced iteration of its Proteus autonomous mobile robot.
This upgraded model accepts conversational instructions from employees without requiring any technical programming. “You simply communicate what task is needed. The robot determines priority levels, navigation paths, and scheduling,” explained Scott Dresser, VP of Amazon Robotics.
Amazon (AMZN) stock experienced approximately 0.39% growth in Friday’s after-hours trading session.
The initial Proteus version has been operational across 25 fulfillment centers in the United States since 2022, transporting carts with weights reaching 400kg. The enhanced model is presently undergoing testing within Amazon’s research facilities, with European deployment scheduled for early 2027.
The Dartford location, designated LCY3, represents Amazon’s highest-volume European warehouse, spanning more than 216,000 square meters. This facility processes 4 million items weekly and currently operates 1,660 Hercules Drive robots on each floor, with each unit capable of hoisting 567kg. The complex features 32 kilometers of conveyor systems and employs SICK scanning technology to measure parcels, interpret labels, and direct them into delivery channels — all within milliseconds while packages remain in constant motion.
Amazon additionally presented Vulcan, its inaugural tactile-sensing robot, along with STARK, an automated tote management system.
Massive European Investment Plan
Accompanying the robotics announcements, Amazon revealed a €10 billion ($11.6 billion) commitment to upgrade fulfillment capabilities throughout Europe over the upcoming years. According to the company, this investment will generate thousands of employment opportunities.
The timing of this announcement creates tension with the company’s recent actions. Amazon has eliminated approximately 30,000 corporate staff members since October — 14,000 in an initial wave followed by another 16,000 in January. CEO Andy Jassy has explicitly stated that artificial intelligence will reduce Amazon’s corporate headcount in future years.
“We will require fewer personnel performing certain roles that exist today,” Jassy communicated in an internal staff memo.
The Employment Debate
Amazon leadership rejected the notion that automation displaces human workers. UK Country Manager John Boumphrey stated to CNBC: “Our experience with robotics shows it has actually increased employment rather than decreased it.”
He noted that Amazon faces difficulties recruiting individuals with appropriate technical expertise — robotics technicians, mechatronics engineers — and has established over 6,000 apprenticeship programs in the UK to address this shortage.
Chief technologist Tye Brady reinforced this position: “Since implementing robotics, we’ve generated hundreds of thousands of employment opportunities.”
Not everyone shares this perspective. A 2024 Citi analysis projected AI-powered robots will reach 1.3 billion units by 2035 and exceed 4 billion by 2050. Rob Garlick, previously leading Citi Global Insights’ innovation division, noted that humanoid robots currently offer faster return on investment compared to human employees, and business executives will pursue cost reductions when financially advantageous.
The UK’s Office for National Statistics disclosed last week that more than one million individuals aged 16-to-24 are presently outside education, employment, or training programs. Boumphrey characterized this as a “national crisis,” attributing it to social and behavioral transformations alongside automation-related challenges.
Amazon confirms the enhanced Proteus will enter European operations during the first half of 2027.
