Woody Allen Not Retiring From Filmmaking, Rep Says—Despite Interview Comments

Topline

A representative for embattled director Woody Allen on Monday clarified comments made by the filmmaker saying he would be retiring after his fiftieth film.

Key Facts

In an interview published Saturday with Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, Allen said he planned to not make more films, and instead focus on writing a novel.

“My idea, in principle, is not to make more movies and focus on writing these stories and, well, now I’m thinking more of a novel,” he told the outlet.

Allen’s representative told several outlets Monday that the 86-year-old “has no intention of retiring” and he “never said he was retiring, nor did he say he was writing another novel.”

Crucial Quote

“He said he was thinking about not making films, as making films that go straight or very quickly to streaming platforms is not so enjoyable for him, as he is a great lover of the cinema experience,” the representative said.

Key Background

In an interview with Alec Baldwin in June, Allen said, “A lot of the thrill is gone” from making movies, and he may turn to writing Broadway plays in the future. Allen was accused by his adopted daughter Dylan of sexually assaulting her when she was a child, and after the #MeToo movement, the Annie Hall director faced intense public scrutiny over the claims. Several major stars, including Kate Winslet, Elliot Page and Colin Firth, have either expressed regret over working with Allen or have pledged to not work with him again.
