AEW Dynamite Results | July 20, 2022

Brody King def. Darby Allin

As expected, there was “Shark Week” signage everywhere.

Darby Allin did a fantastic job bumping for—and bouncing off of—Brody King. This included a scary toss where Allin landed spun around and landed right on his face.

The ominous shark cage was hanging above the ring lit by a red light like a hot lamp.

Brody King absolutely dominated this match until Darby Allin was able to tie King’s feet together and make his comeback.

In an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” moment, this match featured a callback to Allin and King’s awesome elimination spot from the Royal Rampage.

Surprisingly, Brody King won this match with a Gonzo Bomb.

Malakai Black and Sting faced off again, and this could be a great potential win for Black.

Miro walked out wearing aviators, which told me he definitely wasn’t joining the House of Black tonight.

Blackpool Combat Club def. Best Friends

William Regal seemed very taken by Orange Cassidy, and his line of questioning for Cassidy was hilarious.

Despite this being a babyface vs. babyface showdown, fans were firmly behind the Blackpool Combat Club.

Surprisingly, Orange Cassidy spoke on commentary, saying the word “allegedly” in response to Regal’s criticism of Chuck Taylor and Trent Beretta. He also said “uh…okay” to confirm Excalibur’s comments about Wheeler Yuta’s submission background.

Best Friends were dressed in all black and definitely working heel throughout this match.

Part of the “Shark Week” promotion included a shark mascot. If the mascot isn’t revealed to be a wrestler as part of an angle, it will have been a waste.

Swerve in our Glory Celebrate AEW Tag Title Win

Swerve made sure to make reference to Keith Lee arguably getting a bigger ovation than Swerve.

This segment featured an appearance from Kevin Gates, who was shouted out by Swerve Scott.

Kevin Gates delivered a stiff punch to Tony Nese before Swerve Scott threw cake in the face of Smart Mark Sterling. This was essentially a WWE segment on AEW television.

Christian Cage and Luchasaurus def. Varsity Blonds

If Christian Cage stays true to this gimmick, he won’t even tag in. He’ll just stand on the apron and let Luchasaurus do all the work. Thankfully, that’s almost exactly what happened as Christian immediately tagged out and stood on the mat fir the majority of the match. He did, however, tag in when it was time to score the winning pinfall.

Christian Cage has a new t-shirt that says “worked everyone.”

Jungle Boy returned with a steel chair and Luchasaurus graciously stepped aside to let his tag team partner chase down Christian. The Jurassic Express is reunited, for now.

Ricky Starks def. Cole Karter | FTW Championship

Fans were overwhelmingly behind Ricky Starks in this match, possibly because Cole Karter was fresh off a run in WWE NXT.

After this match, AEW set up Ricky Starks vs. Danhausen for the FTW Championship, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Danhausen won.

Dax Harwood’s Promo about 8-Year-Old Daughter

Dax Harwood cut a great promo about the hole in his eight-year-old daughter’s heart and how it closed after she worked hard. Harwood said he was going to “fight like an eight-year-old girl.”

I wouldn’t be surprised if FTR vs. The Briscoe Brothers was the main event for ROH Death Before Dishonor.

The Baddies def. Athena, Nightingale and Statlander

In a pleasant surprise, the legendary Jermaine Dupri accompanied Jade Cargill and The Baddies.

Jim Ross went on a hilarious rant mocking Jade Cargill’s “that bitch” catchphrase and it has to be heard to be believed.

Fans seemed very much into Jade Cargill and Athena finally come face-to-face. They delivered with an impressive striking sequence followed by dueling kip-ups.

To this point in the show, nothing came off as more interesting than Jade Cargill vs. Athena.

Chris Jericho def. Eddie Kingston

In the spirit of barbed wire everywhere, even Justin Roberts’ microphone was covered in barbed wire.

Ironically enough, the only thing that wasn’t covered in barbed wire was the box holding the key to open the cage. You’d think if anything had to be covered in barbed wire, it would be that box.

This figures to be another bloody main event that sends women viewers running for the hills.

Even Eddie Kingston played nice with the corporate cross-promotion. He shouted “Shark Week!” into a barbed wire-covered microphone before this match got underway.

Chris Jericho was bleeding within minutes of this match beginning, and this was before taking a suplex through a barbed wire table.

Anna Jay rejoined Tay Conti by turning on Ruby Soho, who continues to be a beat-up doll in this feud.

Unfortunately, Tay Conti was unable to get the shark cage open with the key, prompting the JAS to simply squeeze through the bars. The announcers even tried to cover for Tay Conti by saying Ruby Soho switched the key.

Thanks to Sammy Guevara, Chris Jericho won this match with a barbed wire covered Judas Effect.
