AEW Dynamite Winners And Grades

Jon Moxley def. Hangman Adam Page

Jon Moxley walked out with his father as he prepared for the showdown in his hometown. Hangman Adam Page, the visitor, came out to a frosty reaction at best.

Hangman Adam Page tossed a chair right into Jon Moxley’s face, and though Moxley appeared to blade, I think he would have bled regardless. In a matter of minutes, Moxley was a predictably bloody mess.

Taking cues from the famed Survivor Series 1997 match between Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart, this match started as a wild brawl for several minutes before the bell finally rang.

Moxley and Page were on the outside of the ring for at least 10 seconds before referee Paul Turner bothered to start his count.

This was a great rubber match between Moxley and Hangman Adam Page, which ended with Moxley countering the Bulldog Choke from Hangman with a rollup.

Hangman Adam Page’s beef with the Blackpool Combat Club will inevitably lead to a reunion with The Elite.

Jon Moxley vs. Hangman Adam Page Grade: A

The Acclaimed def. Local Competitors

Max Caster’s rap compared the local competitors to the Beverly Brothers, and also made a timely mention of Tom Brady’s retirement.

After the quick Acclaimed victory, Billy Gunn and The Gunn Club furthered their tensions. This was an excellent segment that built up a tag team title match after The Gunn Club took deeply personal shots at Billy Gunn’s parenting and past substance abuse. Based on Gunn accepting on behalf of The Acclaimed, it’ll be interesting to see if Billy Gunn sides with his sons. Hopefully not, it’s too early to break up this act.

The Acclaimed vs. Local Competitors Grade: C

Konosuke Takeshita def. Brian Cage

Brian Cage has been protected quite well since returning to the AEW roster, so this projected to be Takeshita’s biggest win.

This was another one of those great matches Takeshita has in his sleep, and it finally resulted in a victory.

Konosuke Takeshita vs. Brian Cage Grade: B

Bryan Danielson def. Timothy Thatcher

Timothy Thatcher’s classical theme music was both awesome and terrifying.

Since Bryan Danielson will be occupied with a likely world title match against MJF, if AEW moves forward with the Blackpool Combat Club vs. The Elite, Konosuke Takeshita—who once again came to Danielson’s aid by chasing off MJF—could be an adequate fill-in.

A backstage brawl between Konosuke Takeshita and MJF led to an Eliminator match between the two next week. Takeshita will go right back to his losing ways.

MJF offered a bounty to Rush in a highly entertaining backstage segment. Despite speaking two different languages, they had palpable chemistry.

Bryan Danielson vs. Timothy Thatcher Grade: B+

Jade Cargill def. Red Velvet

At the very least, Jade Cargill’s 50th win deserved a main event, but the fact that AEW threw it together at the last minute, with no plaque, illustrates how AEW continues to drop the ball with Jade.

Red Velvet suffered yet another loss to Jade Cargill, but not before getting a visual pinfall over Jade. The announcers played up how Kiera Hogan accidentally cost her the match, suggesting a future split between Hogan and Red Velvet.

Jade Cargill vs. Red Velvet Grade: B-

Samoa Joe def. Darby Allin

To set the tone, Darby Allin walked out in a sweatshirt covered in thumbtacks. He even took a couple bumps while wearing it. I’d like to believe it was a gimmicked sweatshirt, but this is Darby Allin we’re talking about. Darby Allin continues to find new and exciting ways to destroy his body.

Samoa Joe rag-dolling Darby Allin never gets old. This time around, Joe yeeted Darby all the way out of the ring.

With Samoa Joe bloodied prior to AEW going to break, this show was book-ended by bloody matches.

Darby Allin tried to put his sweatshirt back on to deliver the Coffin Drop, but the sleeves were pinned to the sweatshirt, so he could barely put it on his body. He still improvised and delivered the Coffin Drop with half his sweatshirt on.

The elaborate finish came when Darby Allin exposed the ring boards, only to crash and burn through a table on the outside. Samoa Joe later delivered a Muscle Buster on the exposed board for the win.

Wardlow reemerged after Samoa Joe’s big win, and hopefully AEW was able to give him some much-needed direction while writing creative for this character during his time away.
