Wes Anderson’s New Movie ‘Asteroid City’ Is Peak Wes Anderson

Wes Anderson is one of those filmmakers whose work is so distinctly theirs that you don’t need to be told. Had you watched the trailer for Asteroid City, you would have known it was a Wes Anderson picture without me telling you. In fact, I’d say this is more true about Anderson movies than any other director, including Quentin Tarantino, with the possible exception of Tim Burton.

Asteroid City, with its star-studded cast, pastel desert, quirky bluegrass and quirkier dialogue, is perhaps the most decidedly Wes Anderson-looking film yet, with all his idiosyncrasies balled up into one.

“The itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention (organized to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition) is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events,” the official synopsis reads.

The film stars Anderson regulars Jason Schwartzman, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, Edward Norton and Adrien Brody as well as Maya Hawke, Jeffrey Wright, Bryan Cranston, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Steve Carell, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie, and Jeff Goldblum (and forgive me, some of those may be Anderson regulars as well, there’s just too many to keep track of in this cast!)

Asteroid City hits theaters on June 16th in limited release and wide release a week later on June 23rd. If Wes Anderson is your cup of tea, this should be right up your alley.
