USMNT’s Timothy Weah Signs Long-Term Deal With Serie A Giants Juventus

Timothy Weah, the starting winger in the United States men’s national soccer team that reached the 2022 FIFA World Cup Round of 16, is a new Juventus player.

The 23-year-old Brooklyn, New York native has found a new home in Italy’s Serie A, the place where his father, George Weah, made history.

Timothy Weah is the son of Liberian soccer legend George Weah, the first and only African recipient of the Ballon d’Or. George Weah enjoyed a particularly successful stint in the late 1990s with Serie A side AC Milan, where he is also remembered for having scored one of the most stunning solo goals.

Despite being faced with high expectations due to his father’s enormous soccer legacy, Timothy Weah has already won a lot in his professional career.

He has lifted four domestic championships – three times in France’s Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-Germain and Lille, one with Scottish club Celtic – and two national cups. He has also hoisted international silverware with the USMNT in the 2021 CONCACAF Nations League final against arch rivals Mexico.

Weah was also a starter in the squad that took part in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, reaching the Round of 16 phase before being knocked out by the Netherlands.

It was in the opening goal in the game against Wales that he showed the world all his best qualities: Starting from the right flank, Weah sprinted diagonally towards the inside of the pitch, where he picked up a through pass by teammate Christian Pulisic and composedly slipped the ball past the goalkeeper with a gentle outside foot touch.

To sign the U.S. international on a permanent deal from French side Lille, Juventus have disbursed €12 million ($13 million), transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed.

He will be the second American player ever signed by Italy’s most successful club after Weston McKennie, the Texas native that has just returned to Juventus following his six-month loan to English Premier
PINC
League side Leeds United.

Upon completion of his medicals on Thursday, Weah will ink a five-year contract, collecting a €2 million annual paycheck.

Weah is thus ready to kick off a new chapter in Serie A, a league that has often proven challenging for attack-minded players due to the Italian teams’ solid defensive organization.

From a tactical standpoint, he will ideally occupy the right wing position in head coach Massimiliano Allegri’s Juventus, taking up the duties carried out by Juan Cuadrado over the last eight seasons wearing the black-and-white vertical stripes.

Weah has the pace and stamina to satisfy Allegri’s offensive and defensive demands on the flank, an area of the pitch that is heavily exploited by Juventus’s playing style. At the same time, he is technically gifted with elusive dribbling skills and pinpoint deliveries, two traits that have the potential to undermine even Serie A’s sturdiest backlines.

Following a turbulent season during which the club suffered a 10-point deduction that caused the exclusion from next year’s UEFA
EFA
Champions League, Weah is called to help the Bianconeri get back to winning ways in Italy, chasing a league title that has been missing since 2020.
