U.S. special forces carried out a “successful” counterterrorism mission in northwest Syria early on Thursday, the Pentagon said in a statement, amid reports of multiple civilian casualties in the region.

Key Facts

In a statement, Pentagon press secretary John Kirby announced the mission’s success and noted that there were “no U.S. casualties,” without providing any additional details.

According to the New York Times, the commando raid may have targeted an al Qaeda leader and several civilians, including children, may have been killed or injured.

The operation reportedly took place in the town of Atmeh in the rebel-controlled Idlib Province and local observers of social media have shared purported videos of gun fire by American helicopters.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that that at least nine people were killed in the operation including women and three children.

President Joe Biden is expected to announce more details about the raid on Thursday morning, according to the Wall Street Journal.

This is a developing story.
