Welcome back to Wordle Wednesday, folks! Step right up. Today, we don’t just solve a Wordle, we also play a riddle. The Wordle is over so quickly, it’s fun to spice things up with an extra brain teaser.

Here’s today’s Wordle Wednesday Riddle:

Two men are in the middle of a vast desert. One is alive, the other is dead. Both are wearing backpacks, but the living man’s pack is open, while the dead man’s is closed. What is in the dead man’s backpack?

Check back in to this blog tomorrow for the answer—or let me know on Twitter or Facebook if you think you’ve figured it out.

Alright, let’s do this Wordle!

Today, I went with a slight variation on Wordle Bot’s favorite word, slate. I figured stale was just about as good, and it did get me a yellow ‘T’—which is exactly what Wordle Bot got on his first guess, too.

From here, I wanted a word that could test out the ‘T’ in another box while also going for some new vowels. I admit, on this one I screwed up a little, though it ended up not really mattering. You see, I guessed shout which re-used the ‘S’ even though it was already out of play.

I made this error because at first I was trying to do a ‘CH’ word with ‘O’ and ‘U’ and ‘T’ and came up empty. Then I thought ‘Hey, how about shout?’ and plopped it in there without thinking. Funny thing is I didn’t even notice until later that I’d made the mistake.

At this point, however, I was in good shape. I had a green ‘H’ and two yellow boxes. I was pretty sure that the ‘T’ had to come first, and with the ‘U’ as my only vowel, I was pretty sure it would be in the middle—very few words I can think of have a U in the last spot and the fourth was already out of play. I came up with two possibilities: thump and thumb.

With no clue which to pick, I just went with my gut and the 50/50 odds. Thankfully, it was right and thump won the day. Huzzah!

My score today: I get +1 point for guessing in 3 and another +1 for beating Wordle Bot (who guessed slate / count / trump / thump). Imagine that, Wordle Bot lost to Trump also! Oh, and count would have made a great second guess for me as well, though I wouldn’t have gotten the ‘H’.

Today’s Wordle Etymology (Via ChatGPT)

The word “thump” is believed to have originated in Middle English, specifically from the Old English word “þumpian,” which meant “to pound with a blunt instrument.” This word eventually evolved into “thumpen” in Middle English, which meant “to strike heavily.” Over time, “thumpen” became “thump,” which is the modern English word that we use today to describe a heavy blow or sound. The word “thump” is onomatopoeic, meaning it imitates the sound it describes, which in this case is the sound of a heavy, dull impact.
