Tim Harrison on Importance of Cardano’s Vasil Hard Fork

The Vasil hard fork is vital for bringing significant enhancement in Cardano’s capability and performance – Tim Harrison.

On 4th July, Vice President of Community and Ecosystem at IOG, Tim Harrison published a blog post stating Cardano’s Vasil hard fork. He explained that the upgrade would be bringing improvements in Plutus smart contracts. He also stated that it is part of Cardano roadmap’s Basho phase – focused on scaling and optimizing the network.

Harrison added that the upcoming hard fork will be placed at the protocol level of Cardano network, while using its hard fork combinator (HFC). HFC is an innovative technology that approves transitions on protocol seamlessly and reduces disruptions. Vasil upgrade will also upgrade Plutus and diffusion pipeline.

Plutus is a smart contract language at the core of Cardano network and pipeline in layman’s terms means for improvements in consensus layer. Harrison further explained that a major part of the development community was behind most of these improvements. Also they are part of Cardano improvement Proposals (CIPs).

Tim Harrison said the Vasil upgrade to be the most significant upgrade on the network. The upgrade comes with significant enhancement capabilities and performance, since Shelley – the upgrade added decentralization to the Cardano network. He expected the Vasil hard fork mainnet to be deployed on Cardano network by the end of July month.

On 28th February, Input Output Global in an official blog post explained the changes expected from hard fork events. It noted at the start of this year that for 2022, Cardano network’s focus will be on hard fork combinator (HFC) events of June and October. Along with this, a handful of other scaling enhancements were also in the queue.

The blog post outlines the important elements included in the plan of scaling the network. This includes pipeline (consensus layer improvement), improved Plutus CIPs, Unspent Transaction Output (UTXO) on-disk storage and Hydra (measurability and security). These features along with traditional features, will enhance the performance of Cardano network and enable it to serve a wide range of defi and dapp projects.
