Tiger Woods Says He’s Probably Going To Play In The Masters

Topline

Tiger Woods said Tuesday he “feel[s] like” he’s going to play in golf’s Masters tournament, according to several reports, in what would be his return to competition after sustaining severe injuries in a car crash last year.

Key Facts

At a press conference, Woods, 46, said he plans to play nine holes tomorrow, before the Masters begins Thursday.

Woods, who has won the prestigious competition five times, said his recovery “has been good” and he’s “excited about how I’ve recovered every day,” though he still has leg pain “each and every day.”

Woods said that he doesn’t “have any qualms about what I can do physically from a golf standpoint,” and instead it’s walking the course that will be “the hard part.”

The golfer said he would not “show up to an event unless I think I can win it,” and said he believes he could achieve his sixth win.

Crucial Quote

“This is not an easy walk to begin with. Now given the condition that my leg is in, it gets a little more difficult,” Woods said. “And 72 holes is a long road. It’s going to be a tough challenge and a challenge that I’m up for.”

Key Background

In February 2021, Woods crashed his car over a median in Los Angeles, sustaining open fractures to the tibia and fibula in his right leg, as well as foot and ankle injuries. He underwent surgery, spent a month in the hospital, and at one point doctors considered amputation. Woods told Golf Digest in November that said he plans to “pick and choose” the events he competes in going forward. Woods, who last played in the Masters in 2020 and last won the tournament in 2019, took a hiatus from golf from 2015 to 2016 to deal with back problems.
