Miami Dolphins (3-0) at Cincinnati Bengals (1-2) Week 4 Preview

It appears the Bengals are suffering through the dreaded Super Bowl hangover, as history has shown plenty of teams struggle the season after a runner-up finish.

Only eight teams—and just one since 1993—have managed to make it back to the big game after falling just short the prior season. Of those eight teams, only three would go on to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.

Cincinnati is hoping to avoid becoming the 13th Super Bowl loser in the last 28 years to miss out on the playoffs entirely the following year. The squad appeared to be in danger of that outcome after stumbling to an 0-2 start but began turning things around last week with a critical victory over the New York Jets.

The Bengals will look to claw back to .500 with another win over an AFC East foe, although it won’t come easy against a talented Dolphins opponent.

Miami is one of just two teams heading into Week 4 with an unblemished record. The offense looks more potent than it has in a long time following the marquee offseason addition of Tyreek Hill.

The superstar wideout has an added an edge this roster has been missing, pairing with sophomore sensation Jaylen Waddle and third-year quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to form one of the NFL’s most dangerous aerial attacks.

The ‘Phins currently rank fourth in passing offense and are tied for the third-most passing touchdowns in the league right now, numbers they will look to improve upon against a Bengals defense that has defended the pass well so far this year. Cincinnati is only conceding 224.7 yards per game through the air and has allowed just two passing touchdowns while notching a pair of interceptions and six sacks.

Bengals vs. Dolphins Week 4 Betting Trends And Predictions

Despite Miami’s superior record, the team will be underdogs in this Thursday Night Football contest. Bookmakers have installed the Bengals as 3.5-point chalk in the game, recently moving the line down a half-point from its opening mark.

The public is split on this number, although Cincy has a slight edge with 52 percent of all bets made against the spread are on the home team to cover. The Bengals are a much more popular play amongst bigger bettors though, evidenced by nearly four-fifths (79 percent) of the handle on their side.

It’s hard to go against the Dolphins right now, however, as they own the best against the spread record in football ahead of Week 4. Like their straight-up record, the ‘Phins are a perfect 3-0 ATS on the year. The Detroit Lions, who are 1-2 SU, are the only other team to cover in all three of their games.

Cincinnati has been one of the worst squads to back in 2022. The team is 1-2 ATS, finally earning its first cover of the season against the Jets last week.

These teams are quite familiar with one another, having matched up three times over the last four years. The Dolphins have won and covered in each of the last two meetings, although both games took place at their home venue. Miami hasn’t won at Paul Brown Stadium since 2012, losing during each of its last two trips to Cincinnati.

Both clubs have trended towards the under this year. All three of the Bengals matchups have landed under, while two of Miami’s first three games have also failed to eclipse the total.

This game has the potential to be low-scoring as well, despite the fact that shops set the total at a relatively lofty 48.5 points. This season has seen a noticeable trend of low-scoring affairs and underdog covers—the under is hitting at a 62.5 percent clip and underdogs are a surprising 29-18-1 ATS overall—and that should continue in Week 4.

Take the Dolphins to stay red-hot, shocking the Bengals in a defense-focused primetime showdown on Thursday Night Football.

Pick: Dolphins +4

Prediction: Dolphins 24 – Bengals 20
