An Amtrak train bound from Los Angeles to Chicago derailed Monday afternoon after hitting a dump truck near Mendon, Mo., killing three, according to state law enforcement, while news outlets report that at least 50 people were injured.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said in a press briefing that two people died on the train and one in the dump truck.

MSHP Lt. Eric Brown said the accident occurred at a crossing on a gravel road that was “uncontrolled,” with no barriers or flashing lights.

Brown said the number of injured was still unknown, while local officials told ABC News and CNN that at least 50 people were hurt .

Uninjured people have been taken to a “safe location” so they can continue their travels.

MSHP officers said seven cars of the eight-car train derailed and over 200 passengers and 14 crew members were believed to be aboard.
