The Top 10 Movies And Shows On Netflix: Week 27

This morning, NetflixNFLX
revealed the Top 10 english-language movies and TV shows on the streaming platform during Week 27 of 2022 (July 4-10) in the United States. Let’s review those findings and observe the trends we’ve seen week over week.

Week 27: Top 10 Movies on Netflix

  1. Sing 2
  2. The Girl in the Picture
  3. The Man from Toronto
  4. Mean Girls
  5. The Sea Beast
  6. The Dark Knight Rises
  7. Final Score
  8. Wanted
  9. Leave No Trace
  10. Wild Card

While you might be led to believe that The Girl in the Picture was destined to capture this #1 position, you’ll have to remember that Sing 2 had a three-day head start. While The Girl in the Picture held the #1 position for four of the seven days last week, Sing 2 capture enough attention during its three-day stint in first place between July 4-6 to propel itself to the top.

With that showing, Sing 2 has captured the top spot for the third straight week. Between June 20 and July 3, the animated hit accrued enough watch time to beat out The Man from Toronto. For the U.S. charts, Sing 2 was probably aided by the streaming service’s youthful audience, as the film has occupied the top spot on Netflix Kids for several days in a row.

Funny enough, however, Sing 2 wasn’t the #1 movie on the global charts for any of those weeks. The Man from Toronto won Weeks 25 and 26, while The Sea Beast was the top movie last week. Sing 2 finished in fourth place this week on the global rankings with 16,580,000 hours of watch time.

The Girl in the Picture was able to capture the #2 spot, despite only being eligible for four of the seven days. That means the true crime documentary racked up quite a few hours of watch time in the U.S. (the film amassed 28,380,000 hours on a worldwide scale). Apparently it was enough to beat out the other top movies that were available all seven days last week, such as The Man from Toronto (which finished in third 24,380,000 hours of watch time on the global charts) and Mean Girls (which finished all the way down in eighth place with just 8,110,000 hours).

It’s striking to see that The Sea Beast finished in first place on the global charts, considering the film was only available for two days. That means the movie piled up an absurdly high watch time in just a couple days—33,520,000 hours to be exact—which is pretty impressive. On the U.S. charts the movie clearly wasn’t as successful, as The Sea Beast finished in just fifth place.

As for the rest of the Top 10, there were no repeats from last week. And the only other film to cross between the U.S. and global charts was The Dark Knight Rises.

Week 27: Top 10 Shows on Netflix

  1. Stranger Things: Season 4
  2. The Umbrella Academy: Season 3
  3. Stranger Things: Season 1
  4. Stranger Things: Season 2
  5. Stranger Things: Season 3
  6. Alone: Season 8
  7. The UnXplained with William Shatner: Season 1
  8. The Umbrella Academy: Season 1
  9. All American: Season 4
  10. Legacies: Season 4

Nothing new here, as the fourth season of Stranger Things continues to dominate both the U.S. and global charts. For six of the seven weeks Stranger Things has been available, it’s captured the #1 spot on each chart. The only week it dropped to second place was Week 25 when the third season of The Umbrella Academy took over.

After two more episodes dropped for the fourth season of Stranger Things, the show re-captured the top spot last week and accrued its highest watch time on a global scale (301,280,000 hours) since Week 21 when it premiered. And this past week the show saw its fourth-best showing on a worldwide scale with 188,190,000 hours of watch time.

In total, that brings the fourth season of Stranger Things’s watch time total to 1.45 billion hours, which is 200 million hours short of Squid Game’s record 1.65 billion hours. So if Stranger Things can have two more solid weeks—which it undoubtedly will—then we’ll have a new top dog by July 24.

Meanwhile, The Umbrella Academy held onto the second-place position on the U.S. charts for the second straight week, but fell to third place on the global charts below the first season of Stranger Things. On the worldwide charts, the third season of The Umbrella Academy racked up 43,840,000 hours of watch time while the first season of Stranger Things pulled together 45,220,000 hours. The other two seasons of Stranger Things rounded out the top five on both the U.S. and global rankings.

Elsewhere, the eighth season of Alone captured the #6 spot on the U.S. charts and the tenth-place position on the global charts. Shows like Manifest and Peaky Blinders were more popular overseas than they were in the U.S., where programs like All American and Legacies where able to chart on the weekly rankings. The only other crossover between both charts was the first season of The Umbrella Academy.
