‘The Lords Of The Fallen’ Is A More Metal Next-Gen Sequel To The Original Game

What do Danzig, Joseph Quinn and CI Games have in common?

This trailer for upcoming RPG The Lords Of The Fallen, which Quinn (Eddie from Stranger Things) narrates over the crunchy guitar riffs of Danzig’s Mother.

Behold:

The game is being developed by Hexworks, a CI Games studio. It’s the sequel to 2014’s Lords of the Fallen, one of the very first “Soulslike” games made after Dark Souls became popular. Well, it’s more of a ‘spiritual successor’ which is why the game isn’t Lords of the Fallen 2, but rather THE Lords of the Fallen (a little confusing, but we’ll allow it).

The original game was pretty good, if a bit janky. Certainly a far cry from the sheer brilliance of Dark Souls. Still, I enjoyed it and played the whole thing start to finish. It didn’t quite live up to the hype, but it had potential and I wondered if we’d get any sequels.

Well, lo and behold, these many years later (nearly a decade!) and The Lords of the Fallen is announced at Gamescom 2022 with the tagline, “Dare to hope” which, I dunno, that’s an odd tagline but the cinematic trailer was fun and I’m excited to see some gameplay and get my hands on this thing. Hopefully it’s every bit as metal as the trailer.

The sequel takes place 1000 years after the original game and is being developed for PC, Xbox Series X|S and PS5 using Unreal Engine 5. It’s apparently five times the size of the original with a fully customizable player character. Lots of magic, tactical combat and even online co-op are planned for the game.

“The Lords of the Fallen is the spiritual successor fans of the original title have always wanted,” said Cezar Virtosu, Creative Director. “The game is significantly larger, with a vast, interconnected dual world split between the realms of the living and dead, that players can explore alone or with friends. It’s darker and more challenging, with faster soulslike combat, stronger thematic, richer narrative, deeper RPG systems, and more immersive storytelling.”

A full gameplay reveal will take place later this year. No release date has been given for the game itself.
