‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ Dethroned In Netflix’s Top 10 List By A New Show

I’ve been writing a lot of these columns, where I discuss whatever new Netflix show has appeared as #1 in the top 10 list, unseating the old champion, but this is one of those times where a crown transfer was inevitable.

The Lincoln Lawyer has had a good run, having been on top solidly since its debut both in the US and a number of global regions, but it has now been dethroned by what else? Stranger Things season 4.

Even before this, Stranger Things was creeping up the top 10 list as people watched old episodes to get ready for the years-later season 4 debut, and now that it’s arrived, the first seven episodes of the nine episode fourth season have taken the top spot a day after their debut.

Stranger Things season 4 has an odd format, seven long episodes followed by a month-long break, and then two giant sized episodes totaling four hours in July for the conclusion. This may seem like it’s the format of a show coming to a close, but there is still a promised season 5 after this, where we know for sure that that’s the last episode of the series. Minus if they decide to do any spin-offs. Reportedly this split was due to production issues, but I’m sure Netflix will also relish a second round of conversation about Stranger Things a month from now, rather than the usual binge-and-forget set-up they have now.

I would expect Stranger Things to sit on top of the charts here for at least a solid week, if not more, as with such long episodes it’s not only popular, but will take most people a while to get through this first part of the season.

As for The Lincoln Lawyer, it’s just an unqualified success for Netflix, at least in terms of viewership. As a show, it’s fine, good even, but nothing spectacular. It has, however, seemed to check all the right boxes for many viewers, and it very much seems that with presumably low filming costs and no A-list stars to feed, a season 2 should be inevitable, even if it has not been announced yet. There are six Lincoln Lawyer books in total, this season was the second book, and the Matthew McConaughey movie ten years ago was the first book. So there’s plenty more source material to follow too. This seems like a renewal no-brainer, and Netflix seems like it’s dropping the ball a little less in that department these days.

But yes, Stranger Things is here to stay on top for a while. I’m about to start watching today, and I am looking forward to seeing what’s in store.
