The Boys’ Spin-Off Will Draw From Season 3, Be Key To Season 4

By now you’ve probably heard about the upcoming spin-off of The Boys, which is technically called “The Boys Presents: Varsity” (there has to be a better way to format that). The show will focus on a college for young Supes, which you can already imagine is going to produce debauchery on par with the main show.

But what it will also produce are storylines that build off the recently Season 3 finale, and things that will feed into Season 4 of the show, as it will apparently air between the two. Here’s what showrunner Eric Kripke had to say to Deadline about how Varsity will “cross over” with the main show, especially in its debut season here:

“There’s definitely crossover, and we’re doing our best to design a universe that sees some of the issues and storylines in Season 3 hand off to the first season in Varsity. Like there’s a presidential campaign happening in the background of that season, and there’s certain things that are happening at that school that are both in reaction to Season 3 of The Boys. There’s Soldier Boy, etcetera, but also some new storylines that are happening in that season of the spinoff that we have to pick up and take into Season 4 of the show.”

What Kripke is referring to is the presidential campaign where main candidate Robert Singer just replaced his assassinated VP running mate with secret Super and Homelander ally Victoria Neumann, now just one head explosion away from the presumed presidency. No doubt season 4 will be about the results of that election, which seem pretty clear. Also, we have the world dealing with the split that’s been created between Starlight and Homelander fans, where Homelander has now more or less been unleashed with his “shoot someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue” moment that shows his fans will support him so long as he’s murdering people they disagree with.

As for what Varsity storylines will lead into season 4 of The Boys, that remains unclear until we get a better sense of that series. What we do know so far is the cast, which includes:

Patrick Schwarzenegger (yes, Arnold’s son), Sean Patrick Thomas, Marco Pigossi, Jaz Sinclair, Chance Perdomo, Lizze Broadway, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Derek Luh, Asa Germann, and Shelley Conn.

So no real massive names in that list, I suppose, but then again, you could have probably said that about The Boys cast too minus Karl Urban and that guy you knew from Gossip Girl. Now Antony Starr is on his way to becoming a household name after his turn as Homelander.

The Boys has gotten better three seasons in, and I am very curious how this college series with a brand new cast will go. But it’s clear fans are going to need to watch it if they want to be current with what’s coming in season 4 of the main show down the road.
