‘That Remains To Be Seen’

President Joe Biden says he hasn’t made a final decision on whether he’ll run for re-election in 2024. “Look, my intention, as I said, to begin with is that I would run again,” he told Scott Pelley of CBS News an interview broadcast Sunday evening on 60 Minutes. “But it’s just an intention. But is it a firm decision that I run again? That remains to be seen.”

Mr. Biden said “it’s much to early” to make an official declaration that he’ll run again, saying that he’ll wait until after the mid-term elections in November and “going into next year” he will “make a decision about what to do.”

The wide-ranging interview touched on questions of Mr. Biden’s age and mental fitness. Asked what that made him think, the president said “watch me. That’s what I think. Watch me. If you think I don’t have the energy level or the mental acuity, then that’s one thing. It’s another thing, you just watch and keep my schedule.”

Following House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip last month to Taiwan, Pelley asked the president to clarify U.S. policy, and whether “U.S. forces, U.S. men and women, would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion.”

Mr. Biden responded “yes.”

“We agree with what we signed onto a long time ago,” the president said. “And that there’s one China policy, and Taiwan makes their own judgments about their independence. We are not moving. We’re not encouraging their being independent. We’re not—that’s their decision.”

The president also told Pelley that “the pandemic is over,” which reportedly surprised some White House staffers.
