Stephen Fulton Vs. Danny Roman: Odds, Records, Prediction

As one of the most talented up-and-comers in boxing, Stephen Fulton has been on a roll lately, triumphing in his last two fights against his two best opponents. Now, he’s ready to fight what perhaps will be the toughest bout of his career against former unified world titlist Danny Roman. It almost assuredly won’t be easy. Here’s everything you need to know about Stephen Fulton vs. Danny Roman, including the odds, their records and a prediction on who will win.

Once considered a top-notch rising prospect, Fulton has cemented himself as one of the best in the 122-pound junior featherweight division, cruising through Angelo Leo last year to win his first world title and then slogging through a tough challenge vs. Brandon Figueroa, where Fulton won by majority decision to earn a second 122-pound belt.

The only other titlist at junior featherweight is Murodjon Akhmadaliev, who beat Roman by split decision in 2020 to claim the other two belts. Fulton, Akhmadaliev and Roman are clearly the top fighters in the division, so the fact two of them are fighting Saturday and the fact the winner could eventually take on Akhmadaliev to become undisputed champion is an exciting development.

“The winner of this fight needs to go for undisputed,” Fulton said. “It’s the other side that wants to keep waiting. Those are the only fights that interest me. It’s all champions against other champions and top contenders for me. Once we take care of this fight, hopefully we go for undisputed next.”

Roman, though, might have something to say about that. Since 2016, Roman has given five undefeated fighters the first loss of their career. He thinks Fulton’s loss-less record is the next one to go.

“I’m up against a very skilled fighter who doesn’t have many flaws, but every man has a weakness, and I’m going to exploit Fulton’s,” Roman said. “I believe my style will be very difficult for him to adjust to. He’s never been in the ring with an experienced fighter like me. I know what needs to be done to be victorious in this fight. The world will see a greatly improved version of myself in this fight. I’ll be throwing a lot of punches until the final bell, and I’m preparing to go the distance.”

Countered Fulton: “I expect Roman to be different against me than in any other fight. He’s looking to get back on top. I have to be smart and able to adapt. That’s what I do best.”

Here’s more info on the Stephen Fulton vs. Danny Roman showdown that U.S. viewers can watch on Showtime beginning at 9 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Stephen Fulton vs. Danny Roman Odds

Fulton is the solid favorite, but there might be some good value on Roman if you think he can pull off the upset. As of this writing, Fulton is -600 (bet $600 to win $100), while Roman is the +400 underdog (win $400 on a $100 wager). But I don’t mind the idea of you taking a flyer on Roman winning by decision at +700. Even if you like Fulton to triumph, you’re still only getting him at -250 to win by decision. I don’t love that bet, unless you were going to parlay it with something else.

If you were looking for a fun parlay for this weekend’s action of boxing (and this is only for entertainment purposes), I might take Fulton to beat Roman by decision at -250, George Kambosos to beat Devin Haney at +125 and David Morrell to knock out Kalvin Henderson at +600. That would pay you $267 on a $100 wager.

Stephen Fulton vs. Danny Roman Records

Fulton has impressed thus far during his eight years as a pro. He’s 20-0 with 8 KOs, and though he’s more of a technical boxer than a powerful puncher, he’s also performed well in tough scraps. Particularly in his last fight vs. Figueroa. “I showed against Brandon Figueroa that I can do whatever it takes to get the job done. I boxed early in my career, and I’ve fought toe-to-toe in recent bouts,” Fulton said. “Being in two dog fights back-to-back has only pushed me to an even higher level of confidence. I can do what I want in that ring at any time. Whenever I want to.”

Roman’s record of 29-3-1 (10 KOs) isn’t necessarily eye-catching. But remember that before losing by the narrowest of margins to Akhmadaliev, Roman had gone more than six years without a defeat. He’s also beaten fighters like former titlist TJ Doheny, former titlist Juan Carlos Payano and Moises Flores. Fulton, though, is better than any of them.

Stephen Fulton vs. Danny Roman Prediction

Against most other 122-pounders, I’d feel good about predicting a Roman victory. But Fulton so far has shown that he’s on a different level. This will be a close fight, and Roman’s aggression will keep the scorecards tight. But Fulton will use his boxing skills and his ability to score punches while fighting close, and he’ll hold off Roman in a close decision, somewhere in the 116-112 range.
