Somehow, Alpha Is Returning To The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead just wrapped up its final day of filming, but as fans know by now, the main series finally ending really means somewhat little for the grand scope of the universe. AMC has five different Walking Dead spin-off series either already airing or coming in the future, plus a series of Rick Grimes movies they’re supposedly still making.

Now, one of The Walking Dead’s most iconic villains, Alpha, played by Samantha Morton, is returning to The Walking Dead universe.

No, not the main show. She has not reattached her head to come wandering into the Commonwealth. Rather, Morton will return as Alpha for Tales of the Walking Dead, a new anthology series featuring six on-off episodes of various stories set in the universe.

While we heard that it was possible that these shows would feature old characters from the series, this is the first confirmed one we’ve heard I believe, as mostly the news has been about new cast members including actors like Olivia Munn, Anthony Edwards, Jillian Bell, Terry Crews, Daniella Pineda, Parker Posey, and Poppy Liu.

I am somewhat curious as to what Alpha’s episode would be about, and if it would also feature her daughter Lydia, who has survived to become a main character on the central series. It’s not like we haven’t explored Alpha’s backstory already. We learned her “origin story’ back when she killed her husband and took her daughter. We saw how she first met Beta out in the wild. But I suppose there are plenty of gaps, and I’d like to see something about maybe some of the earlier Whisperer raids and the communities they took on there.

While I’m tempted to say that this will be the last time we see Alpha, I don’t know if we can say that for sure. One of the main purposes of Tales of the Walking Dead is that it’s meant to be a “test kitchen,” where if a specific episode works well, it could be spooled up for its own full series. So an Alpha prequel show? Not impossible, I suppose.

Though at this point, I genuinely wonder how many Walking Dead shows AMC can balance at one time. There’s Fear the Walking Dead, a Fear spin-off based on a submarine, the Daryl and Carol show, Isle of the Dead with Negan and Maggie and Tales of the Walking Dead itself. Plus the Rick movies. A spin-off of Tales would be a sixth series and I mean man, what are we doing here? But AMC loves its zombies, what can I say?

We’ll see what Alpha is up to when Tales airs later this summer.
