‘Sea Beast’ Steals #1 Spot, ‘Stranger Things’ Continues To Chase ‘Squid Game’ And ‘The Queen’s Gambit’

Here are the top ten movies and TV shows on NetflixNFLX
in the United States for July 12, 2022. Each day, I will update this list and observe the trends that change from day to day, week to week.

July 12: Top 10 Movies on Netflix

  1. The Sea Beast
  2. The Girl in the Picture
  3. 12 Strong
  4. Sing 2
  5. Mean Girls
  6. The Man from Toronto
  7. Wanted
  8. The Dark Knight Rises
  9. Valley of the Dead
  10. Leave No Trace

In a surprise twist, The Sea Beast has stolen the top spot from The Girl in the Picture. Netflix’s latest animated movie debuted in the third-place position on Saturday, behind The Girl in the Picture (the hottest true crime documentary on the streaming service) and Sing 2 (the other animated film currently dominating the charts). With such a weak start, it seemed The Sea Beast would ever rise to capture the #1 position like past successes such as The Mitchells vs. The Machines had.

That means The Girl in the Picture fell to the #2 spot after spending its first five days in first place. The film had potential to become Netflix’s most successful true crime documentary since American Murder: The Family Next Door, which captured the #1 position for seven straight days back in October 2020. In total, American Murder spent 20 days on the charts—so now The Girl in the Picture is chasing that milestone.

The other movie to fall today was Sing 2, which had spent its first 19 days on the charts in either the first-, second-, or third-place position. On its 20th day, it falls to fourth place behind the Chris Hemsworth war film 12 Strong. It remains to be seen if 12 Strong can outdo Hemsworth’s last film to dominate Netflix, Spiderhead, which spent 15 days on the Top 10.

Elsewhere, the Top 10 list is largely the same. Except now Valley of the Dead has entered the equation at #9 and Big Daddy has exited the charts. The Man from Toronto also fell to its lowest position yet at #6. That movie has now spent 18 days on the Top 10.

July 12: Top 10 Shows on Netflix

  1. Stranger Things
  2. Alone
  3. The Umbrella Academy
  4. Boo, Bitch
  5. The Flash
  6. The Longest Night
  7. How to Build a Sex Room
  8. The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch
  9. All American
  10. The UnXplained with William Shatner

New day, same leader. Stranger Things is absolutely dominating on a level that’s unheard of when it comes to the Top 10. The series has now captured 12 straight days in the #1 spot and 43 days overall—and the show’s fourth season has only been eligible for 51 days.

Those 51 days are inching closer and closer to a record. Both Squid Game and The Queen’s Gambit hold the current record for most Top 10 appearances with 79 days. The Queen’s Gambit saw its last day in the #1 position 34 days into its run, while Squid Game held on for just a bit longer. So considering that Stranger Things has held on for this long tells us that the series will likely break that record in 28 days.

The rest of the Top 10 looks pretty similar compared to yesterday. The Umbrella Academy continues to hold down the #3 position for the third straight day. In total, the show’s third season has 20 chart appearances this year. Also, Boo, Bitch and The Flash swapped positions, which means the former reached its highest position yet and the latter saw its lowest showing.

Meanwhile, How to Build a Sex Room rose from #9 to #7, and The UnXplained stretched its Top 10 streak to 17 days. The longest current streak outside of Stranger Things belongs to All American, which has now spent 42 consecutive days on the charts. The show is chasing its 2021 performance when it stayed on the Top 10 for 46 straight days.
