Rani Mukerji’s Film Crosses $2 Million Worldwide In A Week

The Hindi film featuring Rani Mukerji – Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway – has made a gross earning of $2.4 million worldwide in seven days since the release on March 17. The film has collected $1.3 million in India while it collected $1 million in countries outside India, as per the production house. The film is directed by Ashima Chibber and had a limited release across 535 screens in India.

After making an opening collection of $0.15 million Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway, the film collected $0.27 on Saturday and $0.34 million on Sunday in the country. The production house behind the film – Emmay Entertainment – claimed Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway earned $1.2 million worldwide over the first weekend.

The film earned $123,000 on Monday, and collected $133,000 on Tuesday. The collection rose slightly on Wednesday to $155,000 before dipping down to $99,000 on Thursday. Based on Sagarika Chakaraborty’s book The Journey of a Mother, Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway is the story of Indian immigrant mother in Norway, and her emotional and legal troubles. Mukerji plays the role of the mom while Anirban Bhattacharya essays the role of her husband and Neena Gupta and Jim Sarbh also appear in guest roles. Gupta is an Indian politician visiting Norway and Sarbh is a lawyer in the film.

Chakraborty, the real life character, faced a lot of struggles and fights against the Norwegian government to gain the custody of her own children and it took her more than a year she was reunited with them.

Kapil Sharma’s new film Zwigato also completed a week at the ticket windows in India and managed to earn roughly $490,000 in seven days of the release. Directed by Nandita Das (of Firaaq and Manto fame), the film highlights the struggles of a lowe-middle class man losing his job and deciding to make a living by working as a delivery man for a food delivery app. Actors Sayani Gupta and Gul Panag are also seen in guest appearances in Zwigato.

Meanwhile, Anubhav Sinha (of Thappad and Article 15 fame) is riding high on the critical success of his new film, Bheed. The Hindi movie earned $52000 in India on the first day of the release, according to the production house. The collections rose slightly on the second day to $75000 on Saturday. Bheed has collected $182000 in India over two days.

Starring Rajkummar Rao, Ashutosh Rana, Bhumi Pednekar and Kritika Kamra in important roles, the film traces the struggles of migrant workers travelling back to their hometowns during the pandemic-induced lockdown in India in 2020. The film is a realistic portrayal of troubles that people faced at the time, and also highlights the societal flaws of casteism.

Ranbir Kapoor’s Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar has made $15.2 million in 18 days in India. Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar is the first film to star him alongside Shraddha Kapoor. Directed by Luv Ranjan who also co-wrote the film with Rahul Mody, the movie is a love story revolving around a modern day couple and their issues.
