Police Unclear Where He May Be As Manhunt Hits Day Two

Topline

The whereabouts of Washington, D.C., murder suspect Christopher Haynes are unknown following his escape from custody at George Washington University Hospital on Wednesday, which has prompted a large-scale manhunt from federal and local authorities in addition to a since rescinded shelter-in-place order for university students.

Key Facts

D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith did not provide an idea of where Haynes might be as of Thursday but noted in a news conference the suspected murderer has ties to Stafford County, Fauquier County and Prince William County in nearby Virginia.

Smith said a $25,000 reward will be given for information leading to the arrest of Haynes, who was described as a 30-year-old Black male with shoulder-length dreadlocks believed to be wearing a black shirt and gray shorts.

Haynes did not have one of his arms secured to a gurney as police officers changed his handcuffs at GWU Hospital, allowing him to escape, according to Smith, who said Haynes was transported to the facility after complaining about a preexisting ankle injury during processing for a murder charge.

An internal investigation is being conducted into whether one of the police officers with Haynes properly followed procedure.

Key Background

The last confirmed sighting of Haynes, according to Smith, was made as he ran from the hospital. A photo shared by the D.C. Police Department yesterday on X, formerly known as Twitter, shows Haynes walking shoeless in what appears to be a residential garden or patio. Haynes’ appearance in the photo matches the description given by authorities. GWU issued a shelter-in-place order lasting more than an hour after Haynes’ escape from custody at GWU Hospital on Wednesday. The university and surrounding areas were canvassed that same day by multiple law enforcement agencies using vehicles, bikes, K9 units and aerial surveillance. Students are back to business as usual at the 43-acre campus, which currently has an increased police presence.

Tangent

Pennsylvania authorities have been searching for convicted murderer Danelo Cavalcante for more than a week now after the man escaped from a state prison last week. Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens said this week he believed Cavalcante has obtained new clothes and supplies since his escape.
