Can you imagine being young again? That’s the tag line for the a new film produced by Eugenio Derbez and Ben Odell’s 3Pas Studios and Pantelion Films, which brings renowned Mexican telenovela star Veronica Castro back to the big screen in a lead role in Cuando Sea Joven (When I’m Young).
This will be Castro’s first film to be released in the United States. The Spanish-language dramedy will have English subtitles.
In Cuando Sea Joven, Castro plays Malena, a gray-haired elderly widow in her 70s, who escapes from her home when she discovers that her children are planning to send her to a nursing home.
As she roams the streets of Mexico City, reflecting over her life, she enters a studio where the photographer asks her to think of her happiest memory and captures the moment. Well, somehow, magically, that transforms her back to her 22-year-old self and gives her s second shot at living a version of the life she dreamed and missed out on.
Now, posing as “Maria,” portrayed by Natasha Dupeyrón (Señorita 89) to hide her true identity, she becomes the lead singer in her grandson’s band, trying to pursue her dream to sing, which she had to give up. While living this new phase, she also encourages her grandson not to give up on his own dreams.
The movie reunites Castro with Dupeyrón, both of whom worked together in the hit Netflix original series La Casa de las Flores (House of Flowers), a black comedy/telenovela spoof created by Mexican writer and director Manolo Caro.
Other cast members include Michael Ronda (Control Z), Eduardo Santamaría (Buscando a Frida), Pierre Louis (Control Z) and Alejandra Barros (Buscando a Frida) with a special performance by Edgar Vivar (Chespirito, El Chavo del 8 ) and special participation by Maribel Fernández (Amores con trampa) and Manuel “Flaco” Ibañez (Hasta que el dinero nos separe).
Cuando Sea Joven, directed by Raúl Martínez (El Mesero) and written by Juan Carlos Garzón and Angélica Gudiño, is an adaptation of the Korean film Miss Granny written and directed by Hwang Dong-Hyuk, creator of the Netflix international hit Squid Game. The Spanish-language version was also produced in association with LimeLight Productions, CJ ENM and The Lift.
The film will premiere September 23 in more than 300 U.S. theaters, following its debut in Mexico September 15.
Pantelion Films, which is distributing Cuando Sea Joven, previously released the worldwide Derbez hit Instructions Not Included, which became the highest grossing Spanish-language film of all time in the U.S.
