Only Third Of 2022 Non-Acting Emmy Nominations Went To Women, Study Finds

Topline

Just 33% of the nominations for non-acting Emmy awards this year went to women, a study released Thursday from the Women’s Media Center found, in a sign of the continuing male domination of the television industry.

Key Facts

Out of the 2,357 people who received non-acting Emmy nominations in July, 1,572, or 67%, are men, 784 are women and just one is non-binary.

Last year, 32% of non-acting Emmy nominations went to women. Editing had the largest year-over increase, with 35% of nominations going to women, up from 25% last year.

The category with the most number of women nominees was editing, with 36%.

There was a slight increase in the share of women nominated for directing, a category long dominated by men: 15%, compared to 12% last year.

The 10 most-nominated shows all include at least one woman who was nominated as a producer, writer, editor, director or actress—though only one show, Hacks, has a female showrunner and creator.

Crucial Quote

“With those nominee numbers stacked against women, it’s a foregone statistical conclusion that men will continue to dominate the total number of winners in these categories for the 74th annual Primetime Emmy Awards,” the report reads.

What To Watch For

The Emmy Awards air Monday, September 12 on NBC. SNL star Kenan Thompson is hosting.

Key Background

The most-nominated shows this year were Succession, with 25, Ted Lasso and The White Lotus, which each received 20. While gender parity is still a long way off, the 2022 nominations include a number of highlights for women. Quinta Brunson made history as the first Black woman nominated for writing, producing and acting in a comedy series, for her work on freshman frontrunner Abbott Elementary. Selena Gomez is only the third Latina nominated as a producer for Only Murders In The Building. Kim Ji-yeon, an executive producer of Squid Game, is the first Asian American woman nominated for Best Drama Series.
