Omega Gets Animated With Its New 60 Years Of James Bond Themed Watches

Omega is launching two new watches to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the James Bond film franchise along with the brand’s 17 year relationship with 007’s wrist.

The two 42mm Seamaster Diver 300M 60 Years of James Bond editions come in stainless steel and 18k canopus gold respectively but what everyone is more excited about is their film-themed animated casebacks which replicate the famous 007 opening sequence — with Bond in silhouette backdropped by a spinning gun barrel graphic.

Without getting too technical the moiré animation is effected by two discs. The bottom one features a spiral powered by the watch’s central second hand and the transparent top layer is marked with lines which merge with the spinning bottom layer to complete the image of the protagonist in action.

Watches are becoming entertainment systems in their own right. The Omega launch follows Tag Heuer’s Connected Calibre E4 earlier this year with its gallery feature for displaying the owner’s NFT collection. And then there’s Hublot’s Big Bang e-Watch with its World Cup countdown facility. FYI the latter brand’s marketing strategy supplemented traditional ad channels with an additional metaverse play involving an activation in photorealistic metaverse Spatial.

The bezel of the gold version is circled with green and yellow treated natural diamonds. The spectrum of 10 different shades — from forest green to gold/cognac — are a tribute to the flag of Jamaica where Bond author Ian Fleming made his home, GoldenEye. The grey silicon of the dial is a nod to the area’s beaches. Each dial is unique due to the crystallites of the material.

The dial of the stainless steel version is made from blue oxalic anodized aluminium with laser-engraved waves while the bezel features a diving scale filled with white Super-LumiNova. The watch itself is inspired by same Seamaster that 007 wore in GoldenEye.

The 1995 movie marked Omega’s first appearance in the James Bond franchise — courtesy of Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming on the basis that Bond was “a navel man.” The Seamaster 300, originally released in 1957, was issued to military divers around the world and, in 1967, a famous batch of 2nd generation Seamaster 300s was also delivered to the MoD for issue to certain units.

The steel 60 Years of James Bond Seamaster 300 comes in a blue wooden presentation box with three dots inspired by the movie franchise’s opening title sequence.

And while its secret push button opener doesn’t quite measure up to the laser, explosive and electromagnetic capabilities of the fictional Bond watches throughout the years, it’s a nice touch for armchair secret agents.
