Latest exhibition of Olive Allen at Postmasters Gallery purports to recreate the Web3 sphere within the white cube. Collection of latest NFTs is consisted of majority of show’s offerings, ranging from collaged virtual paintings on an animated lush of digital landscape to various artist-designed avatars.
With its inexpensive, roller-ink glitchy and lighting soundtrack, Allen’s show does not actually capture the essence of metaverse. But it does get a few of the effects we link with the world in 2022: venomous reply-guy vibes, video game aesthetics, corporate co-optation, 90s nostalgia.
The exhibition marks the initial outing for Olive Allen, a young NFT enthusiast who seems poised to do what some of her cryptocurrency-art contemporaries have done: set up a foundation in conventional art world.
Magda Sawon, co-founder of Postmasters stated that Olive does not go into NFT sphere with eyes wide open and innocent fascination, there is a vitality to her artworks.
Olive Allen’s Journey In NFT Sphere
Olive Allen is a Russian born NFT artist who initiated creating virtual arts on the tablet, steadily crawling herself into then-nascent communities creating around crypto artwork. She created her own NFT marketplace and a social platform dubbed Decadent, and moved to San Francisco to bloom her founding marketplace.
During 2019, Allen launched “13 Dreadful and Disappointing Items,” a channel of NFT collectibles.
During an interview with SuperRare, the NFT marketplace, she stated that she is fascinated by those approaches, used by streetwear brands. She further adds that she understands the mechanics of it, folks buy and flip. It is similar to the adrenaline rush. Achievement unlocked.
Olive Allen was involved in NFT Gateway’s second-ever drop in 2020, for which she offered numerous “Unbearables,” an NFT collection of teddy bears fighting off distinct modern issues, like one bear is covered in crude oil, another deemed non essential by Amazon.
Similar to sports cards, her NFT artworks were offered in “sealed” packs: acquirers have no idea which “Unbearables” they are gonna get.
Olive Allen’s artwork has been auctioned at SuperRare and Christie’s.
Earlier this year, Olive burned her Russian passport and made a video to show support for Ukraine as well as her anger and disappointment in her home nation Russia. She minted the video which got sold for 3.66 Ethereum and donated the sales to assist Ukrainian children impacted by war.
