New Details Released On Queen’s Funeral–Here’s What To Know

Topline

Queen Elizabeth will be buried with her husband of 73 years, Prince Philip, in a private ceremony for members of the Royal Family after her funeral at Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace announced on Thursday, as more details emerge on the highly anticipated funeral procession.

Key Facts

The queen, who died last week at the age of 96, will continue to lie in state at Westminster Hall, where her children, including King Charles III, will hold a 15-minute vigil at 7:30 p.m. Friday, multiple outlets reported.

Thousands started lining up outside Westminster Hall Wednesday night in a queue that stretched more than three miles as of Thursday morning, for a chance to see the queen lying in state.

Her coffin will remain at Westminster Hall until Monday morning, when it will be taken by the British Royal Navy on a state gun carriage to Westminster Abbey for her funeral, which is expected to draw roughly 2,000 people in attendance.

Following the state funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday, there will be a two-minute national moment of silence, before her coffin is carried past her longtime home at Buckingham Palace for the last time to Wellington Arch.

A State Hearse will then take her coffin to Windsor Castle, where she will be laid to rest at St. George’s Chapel, next to her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, as well as Prince Philip, whose coffin has been lying in the Royal Vault since his death last year.

Thousands of people lined the streets of London in hours-long queues for a glimpse at the royal hearse carrying the queen’s coffin from Buckingham Palace to the House of Parliament on Wednesday, and roughly 20,000 formed a mile-long line to see her coffin as it was marched through Edinburgh on Tuesday.

Key Background

Queen Elizabeth died last week at the age of 96 at her Scottish residence at Balmoral Castle, ending the longest reign of a British monarch at 70 years. British officials did not disclose the cause of her death, although she had taken a step back from public affairs and dealt with a number of health concerns over the past year. Her death sparked a massive outflow of condolences from celebrities and world leaders. A number of restaurants and businesses announced they will close on Monday, while even some hospital visits and other funerals will be postponed for the queen’s funeral.
