Netflix ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Confirmation Reveals New Plot Details, Returning Characters

I don’t really know what happened with Netflix and Squid Game season 2, as I swear I’ve written about three different stories already where creator/director/writer Hwang Dong-Hyuk spoke openly about its existence.

But now, Netflix wants to “officially” confirm that yes, it’s making another season of its most popular series of all time by a massive margin, as if that was ever a question. We did not get a date for it, but again, Hwang Dong-Hyuk has already indicated early 2024, most likely, which sounds like a while, but not when you realize it took him more than a decade to get the first season made.

The announcement also comes with a new note from Hwang Dong-Hyuk which lays out some details of the storyline of returning characters and directions season 2 will be moving:

“It took 12 years to bring the first season of ‘Squid Game’ to life last year. But it took 12 days for ‘Squid Game’ to become the most popular Netflix series ever.

As the writer, director, and producer of ‘Squid Game, a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show.

And now, Gi-hun returns. The Front Man returns. Season 2 is coming. The man in the suit with ddakji might be back. You’ll also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su.

Join us once more for a whole new round.

– Hwang Dong-hyuk

Director, Writer, and Executive Producer of ‘Squid Game’ ”

So as a refresher, if you forget everyone’s name:

  • Gi-hun is the main character who won the game and dyed his hair red, choosing to pursue the game masters rather than reunite with his daughter in the end.
  • The Front Man is the masked guy who was revealed to be a former cop who runs the moment-to-moment action of the games.
  • The man in the suit with ddakji is the slapping guy who originally recruited Gi-hun, played by heartthrob actor Gong Yoo.
  • Young-hee is actually the giant doll from the first game responsible for executing players. Turns out she will have a male counterpart, it seems.

So yes, there’s a lot to work with. This new information joins past information that the focus on the Front Man may delve into police corruption in Korea, similar to how season 1 took on wealth inequality as a major issue. I assume that Gi-hun’s goal is to bring down the game, but also that we’ll see a new game with new players at the same time.

Anyway, I’m certainly looking forward to it, and am going to try to manage expectations. We’ll see when we get more info next.
