MSNBC Beats CNN, Fox News In Cable News Ratings For January 6th Committee’s Final Hearing

The final public hearing of the committee investigating the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol drew more than 5 million viewers across the three cable news networks, with MSNBC’s live coverage leading with a total audience of 2.4 million viewers, followed by CNN (1.8 million viewers) and Fox News Channel (900,000 viewers), according to fast national ratings data compiled by Nielsen. The viewership figures are likely to increase when final ratings data is released.

MSNBC has dominated the ratings race for each of the nine public hearings by the committee, which on Monday focused on former President Donald Trump’s role in bringing his supporters to Washington and then urging them to march on the Capitol in an effort to prevent the official certification of the results of the 2020 presidential election led to the committee’s unanimous vote to refer the results of the investigation to the Justice Department to consider criminal charges against Mr. Trump and others.

The committee’s recommendation dominated cable news throughout the afternoon Monday, and into prime time, when MSNBC scored a rare victory over Fox News Channel, delivering an average total audience of 2.04 million viewers, followed closely by Fox News Channel (2.02 million viewers) and CNN (657,000 viewers).

MSNBC also won among viewers 25-54, the coveted demographic most valued by advertisers. MSNBC drew 230,000 viewers, followed by Fox News (220,000 viewers) and CNN (110,000 viewers). This was MSNBC’s first time winning the prime time key demo since shortly after the January 6 attack, on February 24, 2021.
