Mindy Kaling To Be Honored By PGA With Norman Lear Award

Mindy Kaling is set to be given the Producers Guild of America Awards’ Norman Lear Achievement in Television award. The actress and producer will be awarded at the PGA’s ceremony on Feb. 25, 2023, at The Beverly Hilton.

The award recognizes “a producer or producing team for an extraordinary body of work in television.” The award was first given in 1990 to David Wolper. Past recipients include Garry Marshall, Lorne Michaels, Jerry Bruckheimer, Aaron Spelling, Dick Wolf and others. The first solo woman to be recognized with the award was Shonda Rhimes in 2016. However, Marcy Carsey, Tom Werner and Caryn Mandabach were recognized together in 2002. Kaling will be the fourth solo woman and the second woman of color to be given the award.

“Comedy can break boundaries and push culture forward; Mindy Kaling‘s immense contributions to the television comedy landscape are prime examples of this truth,” said Producers Guild of America Presidents Stephanie Allain and Donald De Line. “Kaling is known for her trailblazing work on The Office,a widely loved and infinitely rewatchable contemporary classic, but it’s her work producing series from diverse female perspectives that is reshaping the industry. From The Mindy Project, to Never Have I Ever, to The Sex Lives of College Girls, Kaling has proven just how much audiences have been craving funny, relatable stories about characters we’ve rarely see as television protagonists. We are so happy to present her with the Norman Lear Award at this year’s PGA Awards ceremony.”

Kaling may be most recognized for her roles on shows like The Office or The Mindy Project, but she also is the creator and an EP of Netflix’sNFLX
Never Have I Ever and the HBO Max series, The Sex Lives of College Girls. Notably, Kaling also worked as a writer and producer on The Office and The Mindy Project. She is also a New York Times
NYT
bestselling author of Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me (And Other Concerns) and Why Not Me? Recently Kaling won a Tony for A Strange Loop, which she produced. Currently, she is working on the animated adult-comedy Scooby-Doo prequel Velma and Legally Blonde 3.

“It is such an honor to be asked to receive the Norman Lear Award, a prize named after the prolific and groundbreaking producer I am so inspired by. To be included in this prestigious group of past recipients is humbling, and I’m so grateful to the Producers Guild for this recognition”, said Kaling.
