Miley Cyrus is back with an exciting new single, “Used To Be Young,” which was released last month. The tune has become a quick hit, and it keeps her winning streak going, which started in the beginning of 2023 with her smash “Flowers.”
While it’s always a good thing for a star like Cyrus to rise toward the top of the Billboard charts with a new tune, “Used To Be Young” may also help her earn some much-desired Grammy love, even if she doesn’t submit the cut for consideration.
“Used To Be Young” shows a much more mature side of Cyrus, which she is clearly trying to sell to the world. This latest cut is more adult-leaning than some of her past work, which makes sense, as she’s older now. She’s had her wild phase, and now she’s ready to make music that’s a bit more meaningful–the kind that Grammy voters love.
For years, Cyrus wasn’t considered the type of artist that Recording Academy members would select for Grammy nominations. This isn’t uncommon with pop stars, especially those who rely a bit more on antics and sex appeal over what many voters would say is substance. Cyrus was in the same boat for a long time as artists like Demi Lovato, Kesha, and others, who only earned Grammy nominations after they toned their public personas down.
Cyrus has been nominated for two Grammys throughout her career, but only one was for her own work. That’s surprising, given how massively successful she has been for more than a decade. Perhaps voters didn’t think her work was worthy of being nominated, or it’s possible they saw her as not serious enough to warrant a nod. With her recent collection and the image she’s been sharing, it seems like that may be changing.
The singer-songwriter is already a likely nominee at the upcoming Grammys with her recent smash hit “Flowers.” That tune opened at No. 1 on the Hot 100 in January and has remained a huge success ever since. Many in the music industry believe that “Flowers” will compete for major prizes, like Record and Song of the Year. It could also finally lead to her winning a prize, but that’s only if voters feel the need to reward it.
So, Cyrus has the right song to vie for Grammys, but will her past image as pop’s bad girl hinder her chances? It’s been years since she talked about drugs or sex in interviews or twerked on someone on stage, and lately she’s been focusing more on the work and on changing how people see her, especially Grammy voters.
The success of a mature smash like “Flowers” is doing a lot to change people’s perception of her, and now “Used To Be Young” is furthering that mission. Cyrus likely won’t submit her new single, so as not to confuse those picking the winners and split the vote, but it still has a place in her Grammy campaign. If voters continue to see how things are changing in a way they like when it comes to her and her music, they may be more willing to give her some gold, or at least a nomination.
