Metaverse as a Poor Game by Xbox’s Phil Spencer

  • Xbox’s head Spencer thoughts on metaverse.
  • Spencer criticizes Meta.
  • Xbox is way apart from metaverse.

CEO of Microsoft’s gaming, head of the Xbox brand, Phil Spencer is not fully satisfied by the current position of metaverse. He stated – “Today it’s a poorly built video game. Building a metaverse that’s like a living room is not how I want to spend my time.”

But representing his views upon metaverse, Spencer added that these are the budding stage and “this will evolve”. In 2021, the grand social media company, Facebook rebranded itself as Meta which led the metaverse to become the watchword since.

He sarcastically compared Meta’s development to a living room because the organization is positioning the metaverse like a tool used for business purposes in order to gather to conduct any meeting.

He also feels about the evolution in the metaverse that will soon take place. He remarked- “I tease a little bit in (saying it’s) a bad video game. I just think we’re early.” But along with it, he believes, the immersive virtual world is “going to end up looking like more video games than some of the models that I see for the metaverse today.”

According to the website of Meta, the metaverse is the next full proof solution to social connection and the successor of the smartphone internet. And Microsoft says,  it is “the ability to bridge the digital and the physical worlds”.

The upcoming technology has faced criticisms from many. Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president, has claimed it as “a word I’ll never use”. Also, Snap CEO, Evan Spiegel represented it as “living inside a computer”. From a certain period, metaverse is under dim light followed by many criticisms.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been supporting metaverse for a long time. In 2021, Facebook was rebranded as Meta, remarking about the centered and primary focus of the company. So far till now, he has spent approx $15 billion on creating a platform that connects millions of people in the digital universe.

Mark recently said that the metaverse is a “massive opportunity”  with immense potential, and he strongly feels that developing metaverse platforms will “unlock hundreds of billions of dollars”.

Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg has been on metaverse’s side for a long time. Until now , Meta has spent an estimated $15 billion on the metaverse. It is remarked by him as a “massive opportunity”. He strongly believes that evolving metaverse platforms will “unlock hundreds of billions of dollars”.

Spender also told- “If I think about video games, for years we’ve been putting people together in 3D spaces to go and save the world from invading aliens, or conquer the castle, building a metaverse that looks like a meeting room, I just find that’s not where I want to spend most of my time.”
