A call for proposals (RFP) for Meta AR/VR Policy Research in the Asia Pacific area was jointly launched today by Meta and the Centre for Civil Society and Governance of The University of Hong Kong. 

What this proposal is all about?

Within 10 years, Meta wants a billion people to use the metaverse as a regular part of their 

This involves figuring out effective ways to handle policy problems and difficulties, as well as opening up chances in the metaverse and augmented and virtual reality, eventually empowering individuals to forge relationships with one another and unite the globe.

This research effort invites the academic community in the area to do research that focuses on finding solutions to help with the ethical advancement of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technology.

According to Professor Wai-Fung Lam, director of the Centre for Civil Society and Governance, “We are pleased to work further with other academic communities in APAC to continue the intellectual dialogues concerning the various facets of AR and VR, building on the success we have had with Meta on the research initiative on Ethics in Artificial Intelligence (AI) in 2020.

The University of Hong Kong’s Centre for Civil Society and Governance and Meta is happy to extend an invitation to academics to submit proposals for research on the following subjects:

  1. Economic opportunity: how to expand consumer options, promote competition, and keep a booming digital economy
  • How to safeguard people’s privacy while using fewer data, developing technology to enable privacy-protective data uses, and giving individuals access to and control over their data.
  • How can we ensure that these technologies are created in an accessible and inclusive manner? Equity and inclusion
  • Safety and integrity: How can we keep individuals secure online while also equipping them with the means to take appropriate action or seek assistance if they encounter something unsettling?
