Manchester United Confident Bruno Fernandes Will Sign New Contract

Manchester United are confident their Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes will extend his contract at Old Trafford

Talks between the club and Fernandes have been on hold since the start of the year, but United sources have stressed they remain calm about the situation, there is “no rush and no alarm” and they expect to reach an agreement.

United have confirmed there have been “good discussions” between the two parties. There is a firm expectation Fernandes wants to stay at the club.

The player himself is very happy at Old Trafford, and there is an acceptance from both parties this is all part of the normal process of negotiations.

In any case Fernandes has a contract that runs until 2025 and the club also retain the option of extending it by another year.

When Fernandes joined United from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 he signed a five and a half year contract with an estimated weekly wage of £100,000.

Since then he has been one of United’s most influential players, scoring 35 goals and contributing 25 assists over the course of 78 Premier League games.

He has also created the most chances (201) of any player in the Premier League since his debut in February 2020.

He has won Manchester United’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award for both the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.

Fernandes’ form might have suffered in recent months as United have endured a disappointing season in both the Premier League and cup competitions, but he is still the club’s second leading scorer behind his compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo, with 9 goals from 37 games in all competitions.

After proving to be such a huge success over the last two and a half years there is a natural inclination from Fernandes and his camp to upgrade his existing contract, with a salary that would make him one of United’s highest earners.

At the moment, he is some way behind, Cristiano Ronaldo on an estimated weekly wage of £400,000, David De Gea on £375,000, Jadon Sancho on £350,000 and Raphael Varane on £300,000.

United have made what they believe is a generous contract offer and are hoping they can reach an agreement before the start of next season.
