Man Fatally Shot On NYC Subway Was Goldman Sachs Employee

Topline

A 48-year old man fatally shot in the chest aboard a New York City subway train as it approached Canal Street station in Manhattan on Sunday was identified by police as Daniel Enriquez, a Goldman Sachs employee who was killed about six weeks after a subway shooting in Brooklyn left dozens injured.

Key Facts

The shooting occurred aboard a Q Line train in the Canal Street train station around 11:42 a.m., the New York Police Department said at a press conference.

Enriquez was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he died, NYPD Chief of Department Kenneth Corey said.

Witnesses said the suspect was pacing back and forth in a train car before shooting the victim at close range and without provocation, then fled from the train, according to Corey.

Enriquez’s family criticized Mayor Eric Adams for the levels of crime in the city, telling him to “do your job” and “get crime off the streets.”

Goldman Sachs chief executive David Solomon called the shooting a “senseless tragedy” and said Enriquez was a “beloved” member of the firm for nine years.

What We Don’t Know

Who the shooter is. Corey said the suspect, described as a heavyset, bearded, dark-skinned male last seen wearing a dark-colored hoodie, is not in custody. The NYPD is seeking cell phone photos or videos that might show anything relevant to the incident, he added, and the force is conducting an investigation at the station. New York City Transit Authority said this will cause delays as some subway trains were rerouted.

Key Background

The incident came just weeks after a shooting aboard a Brooklyn subway train that left 10 people shot and a total of 29 injured. Following a manhunt that included hundreds of officers, the NYPD arrested alleged shooter Frank R. James, who was reportedly tied to the shooting by items found at the crime scene, including a credit card with his name on it. James pleaded not guilty to terrorism and weapons charges connected to the attack, which could result in a sentence of life imprisonment if he is convicted. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) said she took a subway ride following the shooting but before James’s apprehension to show that New Yorkers are “not afraid to take our subway.”
