Man Fatally Shot On NYC Subway Train, Police Say

Topline

A 48-year-old man was fatally shot in the chest aboard a New York City subway train as it approached Canal Street station in Manhattan on Sunday, police announced, about six weeks after a subway shooting in Brooklyn left dozens injured.

Key Facts

The shooting occurred aboard a Q Line train in the Canal Street train station around 11:42 a.m., the New York Police Department said at a press conference.

The man who was shot was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he died, NYPD Chief of Department Kenneth Corey said.

A suspect is not yet in custody, Corey said.

Witnesses said the suspect was pacing back and forth in a train car before shooting the victim at close range and without provocation, then fled from the train, according to Corey.

The NYPD is conducting an investigation at the station, causing delays as some subway trains were rerouted, the New York City Transit Authority announced on Twitter.

What We Don’t Know

Police have not yet released any information about the victim other than his age and sex.

Tangent

Corey described the suspect as a heavyset, bearded, dark-skinned male last seen wearing a dark-colored hoodie. The NYPD is seeking cell phone photos or videos that might show anything relevant to the incident, he added.

Key Background

The incident came just weeks after a shooting aboard a Brooklyn subway train that left 10 people shot and a total of 29 injured. Following a manhunt that included hundreds of officers, the NYPD arrested alleged shooter Frank R. James, who was reportedly tied to the shooting by items found at the crime scene, including a credit card with his name on it. James pleaded not guilty to terrorism and weapons charges connected to the attack, which could result in a sentence of life imprisonment if he is convicted. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) said she took a subway ride following the shooting but before James’s apprehension to show that New Yorkers are “not afraid to take our subway.”
